Congratulations on securing your IB SA 2025 role! As a sophomore in college, you have a unique opportunity this summer to both enjoy yourself and prepare for your upcoming internship. Here are a couple of recommendations that blend fun and skill-building, which could be beneficial for your future in investment banking:

  1. Work at Your Local Golf Course: This can be a fantastic way to enjoy your summer while developing soft skills that are crucial in the finance world. Working in such an environment can enhance your customer service skills, teach you how to handle various types of people, and improve your problem-solving abilities. These are all transferable skills that will serve you well in any client-facing role, including investment banking. Additionally, golf courses are often frequented by professionals from various industries, offering a unique networking opportunity.

  2. Learn Trading Options: Diving into options trading can be both fun and educational. It will give you a hands-on understanding of financial markets, instruments, and risk management strategies. This knowledge can be incredibly valuable in your future career, especially in areas related to trading, asset management, or even within certain divisions of investment banking. However, it's important to approach this with caution and perhaps start with a simulation account to avoid financial risk.

  3. Take an Online Course: Consider enrolling in an online course related to finance, financial modeling, or even something outside your field of study that interests you. Websites like Coursera, edX, and Udemy offer courses from top universities and companies. This can be a great way to learn something new, add a certification to your resume, and show initiative and a willingness to learn.

  4. Volunteer or Pursue a Passion Project: Engaging in volunteer work or dedicating time to a passion project can be incredibly fulfilling. Not only does it provide a sense of accomplishment, but it also demonstrates to future employers that you are well-rounded and have interests outside of finance. Whether it's related to community service, starting a blog, or building something, these experiences can provide great talking points in interviews.

Remember, the summer before your IB internship is a great time to relax and recharge, but also to prepare and build skills that will benefit you in the long run. Whatever you choose to do, make sure it's something that you'll enjoy and learn from.
