Super homesick.
I'm a first year analyst at an MF in NYC. Long story short, ~6 months in and I'm incredibly homesick (originally from elsewhere). I miss my family / friends, culture, everything. How do I go about bringing this up? I'd like to continue working for the firm but remote for a bit.
Don't think that is gonna fly.
Disagree. An2 here at a hardcore M&A shop and we bring in fluffy dogs for our VPs mental health all the time. Partners get special treatment in the reading room that has beanbags and biscuits. I’d take the reading room over a buy side offer any day.
You’re already way more successful than me, so I think you know what you’re doing, but being away from home is a big part of growing up. One of my roommates in college during soph/junior year was from Europe and at first was longing for home a lot, but what I think changed is that he started to frame it as “when I’m home for the summer, when I spend time with my family, I’m going to make an extra effort to be present and take nothing for granted.” These are big years of your life and spending them in a city that you may be unfamiliar with is a prime opportunity to break out and prove to yourself that you can find social success in any setting. I have a non-Russian cousin who DJ’d in Russia for a while after growing up and going to college in the US and she has 100s of contacts all over Europe because she pushed to meet people and make the tapestry of her life that much more interesting.
She has hundreds of contacts over Europe? .... right.
I'm sure there was 'contact'
Also 'tapestry of her life' is a great way to describe getting ploughed by 100+ randos
Saying you’re homesick is not going to fly in a professional culture. I know it’s not uncommon, but it’s a juvenile trait. If you’re in nyc make the most of it.
Where are you missing rn?
Could try to move to a fund that has WFH on Fridays, fly / drive out once a month on Thursday nights, spend the weekend at home, work if you need to, head back Sunday.
Don't bring it up. I can't see this going well for someone in a high finance culture which tends to be far more cutthroat than rest of Corporate America. We had an employee at my pre-MBA company that felt this way and we granted them more time off but we also had a large enough team where we could easily cover that person's workload.
We all miss friends and acquaintances from our past. I was really happy getting out of NJ, but I'm 20 miles away, Going home is 90 minutes (fuck the bridge /tunnel and 280,
This will not work at a MF. In some firms in the nicer parts of finance (from a culture perspective) like AM this might be ok (and only at certain shops too) but abs not at a MF
Should you be unable to find an equilibrium it may make more sense to begin searching for a new job.
I'd say suck it up a bit longer. Not saying you have to make this your permanent life, but 6 months in as a first year analyst means you have nearly 0 leverage. Might be tough regardless at a MF, but at least with a couple years of crushing it you might have someone senior willing to step up for you to get what you're looking for, and if not then you have 2 great years of experience on your resume to move to a smaller shop that will
Adding to the above -- invite some of the people you miss the most to come out! Folks love to travel to New York and being able to spend a few days with parents / family / friends -- who as visitors, may appreciate the things you take for granted -- can help you feel more connected to NYC and give you a feel of home.
Also it's New York, there are people from everywhere. If you're from the States, hit a sports bar affiliated with one of your teams and chances are it will be filled with folks from your area. If you're international, get out to a restaurant / neighborhood with a lot of other ex-pats and eat the food, speak the language, etc. for a day. Not quite the same but better than nothing.
Life is all about choices, OP, and there is rarely a "right" one. Only you can know whether you value the job more or miss your home more.
