Career Resources
Not many. SoCal is probably the best.
Sydney probs equal
True - I’ve been surfing off the coast of Melbourne as well - Bell’s Beach. But, it is like an hour away from the city. Not sure if there are other breaks closer.
Not a direct surf city but if you were in Singapore you could easily get to Indo for some trips. Arguably the best surf in the world.
I’ve surfed Indo at Lakey Peak - good times and extremely cheap. You could also rent storage in Indo for next to nothing at a hotel and not have to bring your boards back and forth.
San Deigo, Malibu, Newport Beach, Santa Cruz (decently close to the Bay Area), Honolulu
Sydney, SoCal, South Florida, Boston (if you can handle the winter), Lisbon
Sydney. Hear some trading firms at Sydney wake up, surf, head in to work.
In Sydney its quite a large number of the population on the coastal fringe, surfing, ocean swimming, cycling running all sorts of activities.
There’s only one answer here and that’s LA. Might be able to argue Newport Beach but it’s only PIMCO and D.A Davidson really.
Nowhere else has good surf and other countries like Australia are just not good for a career in finance.

Combining a finance career with a love for surfing can be a unique and exciting lifestyle choice. Here are a few finance hubs around the world where you can enjoy good surfing nearby:
1. **Sydney, Australia**: Sydney is home to a vibrant financial sector, including the Australian Securities Exchange. The city also offers world-class surf spots like Bondi Beach and Manly Beach.
2. **Honolulu, Hawaii, USA**: Honolulu is not only a major financial center in the Pacific but also offers some of the best surfing in the world, especially on the North Shore of Oahu.
3. **San Francisco, California, USA**: San Francisco's financial district is renowned for its tech industry, but it's also close to Pacific Ocean beaches like Ocean Beach and Mavericks, famous for big-wave surfing.
4. **New York City, USA**: As the financial capital of the world, New York City has numerous job opportunities in finance. While not known for surfing within the city itself, you can catch great waves in nearby Long Island, New Jersey, or the Hamptons.
5. **San Diego, California, USA**: San Diego boasts a thriving finance sector and some of Southern California's best surf spots, including Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores.
6. **Singapore**: Singapore is a major financial hub in Asia. Although not known for world-class surfing, you can access surf spots in nearby Indonesia and Malaysia with relatively short flights.
7. **London, United Kingdom**: London is a global financial center. While there's no ocean surf, there are indoor surf parks like The Wave London. You can also catch waves on the coastlines of Cornwall and Wales, though they are a bit of a journey from the city.
8. **Barcelona, Spain**: Barcelona has a growing financial sector and is within reach of the Mediterranean surf spots in Catalonia, including Tarragona and Sitges.
9. **Hong Kong**: Hong Kong is a prominent financial hub in Asia. Although there's no surfing within the city itself, you can reach surf destinations in nearby regions like Shek O in Hong Kong or Taiwan and the Philippines with short flights.
10. **Mumbai, India**: Mumbai is a major financial center in India. While the city doesn't offer great surf, you can explore surf destinations along India's western coastline like Goa and Kerala.
Keep in mind that the availability of good surfing spots may vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. If you're considering such a lifestyle, it's essential to strike a balance between your career aspirations and your passion for surfing, as well as to research visa requirements and job opportunities in your chosen finance hub.
Anyone here surf in ny before? Heard some areas in brooklyn and long island are good for that
Far Rockaway is one spot. You could surf early in the morning and be at your desk in Manhattan by 9AM.
They should open more offices in southern and western Florida
Can second far rockaway as a good surfing spot; west coast still best place though
A few observations from having lived in the locations:
Sydney - Clearly the best for surfing. Conditions are good all year round, many offices start work late (9am starts) allowing a morning surf before work. Tibra (a trading co), has offices down the coast in Austinmer facing the beach. Only downside is that property costs near the beach is high (Manly, Bondi, Coogee, even Maroubra) but the commutes are short (30 minutes by bike from Bondi to the CBD is very doable, Maroubra 35)
London - Sea temp is far colder in the UK, Cornwall is reachable for the weekends (the sleeper train to Newquay is a good one) but the immediate surrounds of London is rubbish and its not commutable. Closer to London is Devon (4 hr drive to Croyde) or if you want to attempt it, the Severn Bore.
Singapore - Flat as a pancake and the sea has an "aroma" to it. Indonesia (with its awesome beaches) is close by, but you need to fly if going further away than Bintan Island (still pretty flat).
Hong Kong - people do try to surf, but Tai Long Wan / 大浪灣 is a name reflecting hope amongst surfers rather than reality.
Others (Not lived, but visited)
Tokyo - This is an option worth researching, Japan has some awesome locations, but getting between Tokyo and the beach may take a little figuring out, but shouldn't be too bad given their fantastic public transport.
Dublin - Again, not a major financial canter, but the West Coast of Ireland is pretty wild and cold
Edinburgh / Glasgow - Cold weather surfing is doable.
Why is surfing a priority for people when looking for where to work?
Can’t people have hobbies they enjoy? I’d prefer to be in SoCal for the surf/snowboarding.
