The Conservative Attack on Facebook is Misguided

I think the title says it all. Not only is it misguided, but it directly contradicts conservative/libertarian ideology. In fact, it's implicitly the exact argument that liberals make in defense of big government and market interventionism. But beyond the philosophical contradiction, the conservative argument is unsound from a legal perspective.

You do not have a right to speak your mind on privately owned forums. That is not a right granted anywhere in the constitution. In fact, Facebook has the right to promote/limit any sort of speech under the first amendment. Any government regulation aimed at FB meant to guide the sort of speech permissible on their platform is a direct violation of the first amendment. In other words, FB has the legal right to squelch conservative speech if it wants to.

No one is forcing anyone to use Facebook. It's all voluntary and there are disclaimers everywhere. Facebook is not a utility comparable to water or electricity. You can live just fine without Facebook. It's not a monopoly on information. It merely redistributes content already available on the internet. If you don't like the organization, you have the right to disassociate yourself from it.

Conservatives need to think of new ways to promote their ideology. Their argument's on this violate the constitution, freedom of association and free speech. More importantly, it may be used against them in the future (regulation of conservative talk radio, as an example).

My 2 cents.

You do bring up some good points. But what is really stirring the pot is inconsistent application of very ambiguous "community standards." The banning/suppressing of people where the perception is that it disproportionately targets conservatives. If FB/Twitter came out and said, "yeah we're liberals so we suppress conservatives" at least they'd be honest. But now they say, "we do not take politics into consideration when making these decisions" then censor/suppress/(shadow) ban conservatives, that's an issue.

These are the findings of our investigation for the individual named "Esuric".

"Esuric" is an MSF graduate of WUSTL who was rejected at many higher ranked schools. In his lack of control and outrage, he posted derogatory comments about many of the schools that rejected him on various business school sites and forums.  He has been found on this forum praising his own school feeding his ego and talking down about other schools. He's even been featured on Poets and Quants "10 Comments That Made us LOL in 2015" bashing MIT Sloan. He was rejected to MIT's MFin program and that is likely what triggered him to create these comments to make himself feel better. Unfortunately even after so many years he still shows many narcissistic and insecure traits as can be seen in his post history. The admissions committees at the schools that rejected him were able to see these negative traits through his application and did what was correct. We know his true identity and are protecting it on this forum. He has been unresponsive to our phone calls and emails and have resorted to try to notify him here.

We were reported to this individual by a member of this forum and our school has documented the findings. We are in the process of notifying other business schools about his behavior and will bar him from engaging in any interaction with their programs and alumni. This is totally unacceptable behavior that betrays the trust upon which intellectual inquiry at business schools depend.
