The improvement in social skills you see in this job is insane.

Bit of a weird post I'll give you that - Lets be honest, most of us aren't in this game for the long run - we wanted to learn the ropes in terms of the actual work, stamp the bank's name next to ours on our resume and then plan our exit.

What I never realized until I finally found some proper time away from the 80 hour weeks spent in this hellhole is just how much my social skills have improved in relatively a short amount of time. When on the phone with somebody, or at the counter of a store, or at the reception desk of a client's offices, meeting new people at a social event - I can build a rapport much more easily and truth be told, get what I want much more quickly.

The most striking examples however of where I've noticed this improvement is honestly among friends. Certain topics of discussion someone decides to bring up, the way they speak to one person vs another (whether another friend, a waiter, or just a random guy), the clothes they've decided to wear, the more visible things they've decided to buy, which photos they decide to post on social media, when someone is trying to complain-brag, or humble-brag etc., when two friends clearly don't actually like one another, when one friend is clearly attracted to another's girlfriend. It's incredible how none of this was remotely apparent to me years ago, but now it all seems so obvious.

Necessity is the mother of invention and years of 80 hour weeks spent with people playing office politics, having to choose your words carefully when speaking with managers or clients apparently gives rise to some stunning results.

My perspective as someone from not in This Job.

Sound legit. I'm sure most people aiming to be in This Job are ambitious people who not only want to improve their careers but also improve themselves. Humans are capable of adapting and rising to the occasion. No doubt, the cluster of people with great social skills, despite being stereotypically wierd, also helps the ones with weaker social skills to assimilate. Being with people really does affect you.

Birds of a feather flock together...

I can agree with this. I certainly feel like I can build up good conversation and general chatter with people where I am memorable to them in a good way, and not in a bad or awkward fashion. Talking on the phone I think has made the biggest difference. I've found being able to talk things up on the phone just moves so much faster and less of a time waste compared to hiding behind an email or text.
