This video should be played in every undergrad sociology class.
I am sick of people declaring "Oh, in Sweden healthcare is free," or other moronic statements. There are no free rides. Sweden works because other countries subsidize it indirectly. Even without massive R&D and defense costs, I am still not sure Sweden will be able to keep its entitlements in place as the population ages.
As for the wonders of the Swedish social system: It is a country of educated, relatively affluent, highly homogenous secular people. Of course there is social harmony. Notice the trouble they are having accepting immigrants into their society; they don't fit the "Swedish mold".

That's the point I knew everything he was going to say would be skewed bullshit. Has he ever thought that the reason the USA makes the most "discoveries" is because it's a country of 300m people, which is a good proportion of all people worldwide living in the developed world? And rainmaker, you don't need to mention "without massive defense costs". It's America's choice to have military bases on all corners of the globe, spend billions on fighter jets that aren't regularly used, and do it's best to "fuck off everyone else". And worst of all, America needs to stop thinking its troops coming home missing legs or arms are "heros". No they're not. Not even close. They're "vegetables".

People in the US think of them as heroes because these soldiers fight abroad to protect and further the collective interest of the US society. When someone risks his life so that you can enjoy security of energy supply and the dominance of your currency, you tend to respect them. Of course, the general public doesn’t understand in depth energy economics and monetary affairs, but they get it that it’s better for them if the US is strong rather than weak. And that’s the case with every nation; it’s just that the US is the strongest now, which pisses the weaker nations off.
