This guy quit his job at McKinsey to pursue a Wharton MBA... and a hip-hop career

Hip hop artist Clyde Kelly Atkins (stage name is Clyde Kelly) quit his job at McKinsey so he would have more free time to pursue his music career and obtain a Wharton MBA at the same time.

“You don’t have anyone in your life that you sort of see on a daily basis. It’s very transient,” Atkins says of the young consulting lifestyle. “It’s fun. I was excited to be doing that at that point in my life. But I also missed that I used to freestyle everyday. I had friends I would come home to and we’d kick raps at the end of the day. It was way different coming back to a hotel at the end of the day by myself.”

When Atkins knew he’d soon be enrolling at Wharton, he decided to commit to recording and producing his first album, Not Rich Yet.

Last November, Atkins officially released [his first] album. The first track, “Inner Strength,” already has more than 168,000 plays on Spotify.

For now, Atkins says he plans on returning to McKinsey for an internship this summer and full-time when he graduates next spring.

I listened to a couple of his songs on Spotify, and while it's not exactly my cup of tea, it's pretty chill music. Mad props to this guy for quitting his job at McKinsey to pursue what he really loves (at least for a while longer while obtaining his MBA).

This got me thinking, what are some of the cooler "side hustles" you've seen people pursue while getting their MBA?

a.) He hasn't quit McKinsey - he's still under its protective womb. FFS he's returning there for SA and FT. John Legend quit BCG right after a label accepted his music. Big difference. b.) His music sucks pretty much. I didn't dig it, and neither did some of my friends who are actively involved in the music industry. Involved as in top label singers and producers. Of course you'd argue: "Umm, your friends don't make all the music that we listen to....". Well they make about 60% of it. c.) Idiots comparing him to John Legend are just stupid. John Legend got mad support from the hip hop movement's rising stars. This guy isn't going to get that level of support.

I wonder with the current circumstances of people getting married later in life and delaying adulthood, how many of these sorts of late bloomer stories we are going to get of people pursuing their dreams after the age of 25. I personally admire that but it is risky.
