"Tiger Mom" Daughter Gets Harvard, Yale

I guess all the Western moms out there who thought Tiger Mom was too strict can go suck it. Amy Chua's daughter is now choosing between Harvard and Yale:

http://www.businessinsider.com/tiger-mom-wins-dau…

One of the comments to the article:

"i'm sure they'll get wonderful grades as well and they'll turn into great 80 hour a week worker drones, but that's it as the spawn of tiger moms are absent from the highest hall of power in the corporate world as they're not taught to think outside the box and the oppressive mothering they've received stunts the entrepreneurial spirit"

I couldn't have said it better myself...

  1. Getting into H/Y doesn't mean happiness or well-adjusted socially. Parenting isn't just about getting your kids into the best schools, it's also about making sure they like what they do, are socially active, etc. I know nothing about her daughter so I won't comment but it's ridiculous to say that just because she got into Harvard and Yale Amy Chua is automatically a good parent.

  2. Amy Chua went to Harvard and teaches at Yale.

I'm all for discipline and making sure my kids value education, etc. but I wouldn't be able to look at myself if I pushed my kids in a way that made them successful but ultimately unhappy. If you ever read the Chua book, you'll see that in the end she realizes that being such a tough parent isn't always the way to go

I just identify because I'm considered one of the toughest parents at my kids' school. I had to sub in for the basketball coach last weekend, and I'm sure some of my fellow parents were horrified that I had their kid running lines and doing push-ups instead of just running around playing tag.

A man has to pay one of two prices in life: he can pay the price of discipline, or he will pay the price of regret.

FUCKING AWESOME! I realized this a few years ago and it's 100% true. +1 when I have bananas again

c'mon, there's a difference between lines and pushups for kids who want to play basketball (which sounds absolutely fine) and not letting your kid go to the bathroom during piano practice or having extracurriculars besides the ones you pre-determined to be acceptable

So does anyone else think that Sophia might be work fucking? Is everyone missing the point of this article?? LOL.

Okay, what the fuck? Has anyone seen what's on the mother's Wikipedia page?!?!?

She is the eldest of four sisters: Michelle, Katrin, and Cynthia. Katrin is a physician and a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. Cynthia, who has Down Syndrome, holds two International Special Olympics gold medals in swimming

Dude, even her mentally handicapped sister is a champion...maybe there is something to all of this.

Odd how they left one sister out. She's probably the black swan of the family because she's only an MD at GS, lol.

[quote=Edmundo Braverman]One of my buddies on Facebook just hit me with this gem. Daughter of Tiger Mom goes on to become porn star:

I'm not sure how much stock I put into anything that the Business Insider writes but I did catch the part where the article references her bio with regards to Warren Buffet being her idol and I can't help but share this with those who have not seen it yet or don't follow ZeroHedge (Where I originally came across this, but can't find the article anymore) :

" A recession is when other people lose their job, a depression is when you lose your job. "

Getting into Harvard etc. is only the first step....congrats that you have raised your child to show success at age 18 to convince a bunch of college admissions officer they are worthy of a 175k label of success. This is only 25% of their life expectancy, and it's what they decide to do with that degree and the range of opportunity that lies beyond that are far more important. Can all of the disciplined parenting pay off or will the child crash and burn when faced with real life decisions....

Best of luck to her daughter (she's pretty cute)--there is no truly correct way to raise a child, only a ton of really awful methods. In the end, most parents probably want the same things for their child, they just have no idea how to go about doing it and subconsciously stick with how they were raised.

Ok, so Chinese parents [stereotypically] push their kids. Good. They're not the only ones, but still, good for them. Now, if mainland China starts having more than one kid, maybe they can avert the impending population crash.
