We need a lot of context here:

Do you want a watch for closing deals only, (limited use dress watch) that plus everyday office watch, or are you going to wear it out and about going through your daily activities? (the second pushes you more towards a chrono or GMT and the last towards a diver--massive oversimplifications, but sorta true)

Do you want the everyday man on the street to know what you're wearing? (in that case Rolex, or more likely given your pricepoint, Omega)  or would you rather only watch geeks know? (I'm really loving Tudor right now)

Lastly, how big are you, both overall size and wrists?  Big watches used to be all the rage until recently, and you can pick up gently used ones, and even overstock 40-45+mm ones for cheaper.  They work for a lot of people, but I'm a smaller guy with small wrists, so I look like Flava Flav if I try to wear a 45mm+ watch.  35-38mm is completely respectable, especially for a dress watch, and may be coming back into style.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Omega Seamaster. The Aqua Terras are great, the Divers are great, the heritage divers are my favorite. Those are in the $6k range.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual. There's a 39mm version that they don't produce anymore, but if you look on sites like Bezel, you can find them in your price range, whether it's new and unworn or slightly used. The one with the Rhodium dial is awesome and is around $7k.

Breitling Chronomat GMT. This is a 40mm watch that I like just for the bracelet. It's around $6k.

IWC Pilot Mark XX. 40mm, cool bracelet, around $6k.

Cartier Santos De Cartier. These are pretty classy looking. The large model is around 40mm and goes for close to $8k.

Suggestions from the guy above are good. Other watches I'd add -

Tudor Blackbay 58 (~$4,000) - given you mentioned you like Submariners

Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch (~$6,000) - classic chronograph design with history associated with it

If you like something more unique in design, take a look at Bulgari Octo Roma, Panerai Luminor, Tag Heuer Monaco

For a new sports watch with a metal band below your price range, Tudor is a great value/choice.

Grand Seiko has amazing finishing/polish and really interesting dials, but would definitely negotiate for 20-30+% off of retail if you are trying to buy new.

Watchrecon . com  is a good way to see what secondary market prices are so you can figure out how much of a hit you are taking for buying new

If you love the Submariner, then you should get the Tudor Black Bay 58 or the Tudor Pelagos 39. Both watches are ~$4k new. Tudor is the sister company of Rolex, is highly respected by watch people, and has grown increasingly popular in recent years. The BB58 is meant to resemble a vintage Submariner and the Pelagos is a modern, titanium dive watch.

The other major dive watch in this price point is the Omega Seamaster for ~$5k new. This watch has a great following, great technology, and is worn by James Bond. Omega is Rolex's biggest competitor and the brand is highly respected / recognizable.

Some other good, non-dive, sport watch suggestions: Omega Aquaterra, Omega Speedmaster, Tudor Black Bay 36, IWC Mark XX, Nomos Club Campus Sport, Longines Spirit 37 & Spirit Zulu Time, Grand Seiko SBGA211, Breitling Chronomat GMT.
