Ways To Job Better?
Adoption is certainly an act of incredible kindness and altruism. But to the agencies that make this possible, it can be a huge money spinner. What makes it especially profitable for the adoption agencies is the fact that it's a loosely regulated business.
The thing is, adoption happens to be a state issue not a federal one. It is up to the states to enforce standards with the adoption agencies. If a state looks the other way when adoption agencies pressure pregnant women or when they make fraudulent statements to adoptive parents, there's nothing that can be done.
If you are a parent who is looking to bring a child into the family, how do you enter the process without having the adoption agencies take advantage?
The first thing you want to do to stay safe in the adoption process is, you want to make sure that you only go with adoption agencies that have a physical presence. You don't want to go with any that are just Internet agencies. The National Foster Care and Adoption Directory is a place you can go to to find adoption agencies that are licensed by your state. The directory will also tell you if there are any complaints that have come in against an agency.
About the first thing that any hopeful adoptive parents ask of an agency is an idea of how long the process can take. And they helpfully mention something like a couple of years. But they're just saying that. No one really knows how long an adoption process can take. They must first send a social worker at your home to see if yours appears to be a good enough home for a child. And then there'll be an FBI clearance to work out. This alone takes for five months. The adoption agencies don't really take this into consideration.
After this, there's the whole process of actually identifying a child or birth mother and doing all the paperwork. If it's an international adoption, it can just take years depending on how speedily things move in that country. If you really want a usable estimate of how long it can take, ask for how long it's taken for other people to be picked by birth mother so far.
About one out of two adoptions stalls because the birth mother decides that she no longer wants to give her baby up. If it isn't the mother who decides against it, it could be the father or the grandmother or something. There are a lot of details to work out. Don't believe any agency that promises quick results. They are probably neglecting to account for all of these delays . .
