What are your hobbies???

When I am off work, I want to take out my stress on something, but I just sit around all day when I have a day off or even after work. A lot of people are telling me to get a gym membership and exercise; I understand the need to exercise and I will, but I honestly don't enjoy exercising and don't believe it will ease my stress.

I feel like hobbies are what keep people's days going and I need that. So, what are your hobbies? What do you do for fun when you have time to spare?

Exercising is gonna be more important later on if you want to avoid doctor bills and complications in life.

Reading, socializing, bike rides, collecting random shit, trying out interesting foods, cooking, traveling, and getting drunk are some of the things I do. Recently been thinking of helping out a charity that helps people study for the tests to become naturalized citizens.

I was looking just to get more involved thinking it'd be good for business school apps later on, but it seemed pretty interesting since actually some of my family did it when they immigrated a while back. This one is specifically through Catholic Charities, but I'm sure many other programs do it too.

It would be a terrible mistake and a disservice to yourself to underestimate the mental benefits of exercise. My suggestion is that you find 45-60 minutes 6 days a week with your favorite form of exercise (mine is swimming). After about 4-5 weeks into this schedule (and do not miss any of the 6 days) you will notice, alongside increased energy and other physical benefits, an improvement in your cognitive dexterity.

Pretty sad how we, as business people, consider hobbies to be what most people do as part of every day life. Dudes ride bikes, read, collect random shit, cook, travel, get drunk, party, exercise, post on forums etc. all while working at Dunkin Donuts.

Fuck that, I love my bonus.

Perhaps seasoned and experienced people in High Finance enjoy the little things in life more? Most people on this website are very driven and goal orientated by once some of the goals have been reached, the smaller things like the activities you mentioned are a lot better.

Nah dude. I'm saying that the more you have to work on your business life, the less time you have for more eclectic hobbies, and eventually the things others do to pass the time are the hobbies you take on more seriously. I'm lamenting not having time as I did when I was younger.

unless you're kai lenny, foil boards are a menace to society at most public beaches

also my hobbies nearly mimic StaphyBone except add reading and subtract BJJ. can't convince myself to roll around with other men for $200/mo. boxing is my preferred combat sport, even though all real fights end up on the ground, so I know I'm at a disadvantage in the real world.

What is distance running?

Like you run 10 miles or 100 miles?

never mind. ive never been to a big race like this but itd be cool to go and see the pros https://www.nbcsports.com/video/jake-wightman-wins-first-fifth-avenue-m…

Wow - that video was awesome! Very exciting. I had to leave before the pro heats.

I had a patella injury on a 5K race on July 4th and stopped running late July. I did cycling instead to train to try to break 5 flat.

I ran a 10K warmup Saturday night in the streets of NYC and across Central Park (about 47min) and felt pretty good.

PR was 5:18 from the 1990s. I had more of a runner’s build then (high school).

Hit a 5:19 official time yesterday. It’s definitely a respectable time, but 5:17 or 5:15 would have been sweet. Ahhh I thought I was going to PR. The finish line is so visible from very far away, it’s awesome and kind of trippy (psychologically) at the same time, as they say in the video.

Was a great race though. My second time running it. Good times.

Baking and cooking are my main stress relievers. I recently started learning calligraphy, so I try to take 15 minutes a day to practice.

To quote my favorite movie: "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy." It's true, man. I try to work out 3x a week as stress relief. It's nice to get yourself moving and getting stronger/healthier in the process. Plus, if I'm busy down at work AND I look like shit, then I'll be extra stressed.

Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't.

Lol nice movie choice. These days it seems I spend the majority of my time working, although I do enjoy it. In my extremely limited free time, working out, surfing, and building furniture take up most of my time. Currently working on an intricate piece and have around 30 hours in it, prolly needs another 30 hours so maybe it’ll be done by the new year? Hopefully.

Swimming, coding (working on a few projects lately), scamming people online, video games, reading, cooking, baking, playing golf and polo with dad when I'm at home

Most of what has been said already; reading, sports etc. Whatever interest you have you need to find the resources to truly explore it and turn it into a hobby. Like watches? Read online magazines, buy cheap watchmaking sets online and attend watch enthusiasts meetings. Interested in languages? Learn some online, explore ethnic areas of your city or get a native language pen pal to practice with. There are plenty of things you can do. Think of something you have an initial interest in and see how far you are willing to pursue it.

Gym, though it doesn't seem like a hobby at 5:30am.

Surfing, volleyball, bicycling, spearfishing, backpacking/camping, side gigs, side chicks, netflix, lil bit of rock climbing, shit posting (though less of a hobby since I get paid to do this at work.) Also not really a hobby, but I throw these themed dinner nights that all the friends love.

Time wise: girl and side gig are tied, then volleyball

Enjoyment rankings: spearfishing, volleyball, side gig

1) Competitive weightlifting / working out 2) Range and sport clay shooting (big gun guy) 3) Cars - performance and track driving 4) Raging with the bros 5) Reading / researching investments 6) Strategy games (Magic the Gathering) 7) Videogames

Honestly for me, nothing kills stress like sitting with friends and shooting the shit over beer and whiskey. I've really started getting into that now, whiskey sampling, and having some older friends to offer advice on what to try next is pretty good. I have a daily gym regimen so I guess you could call that a hobby, but some days it honestly feels more like a chore than work. However, that lets me keep up with my other physical hobbies. I'm currently peak bagging in Latin America, have always enjoyed doing that, and go every third weekend or so for another volcano. Occasionally I'll join up with a local ultimate team and play, or go on an organized bike ride, but my favorite non-regular hobbies all involved the water. When the (rare) chance arises I will always jump on a diving or sailing trip, and I'd like to turn skydiving into the water into a hobby (though I've only done that once so far).

Snowboarding, kayaking, playing basketball, and I love to watch college football. Hate to admit it but a lot of Saturdays are spent sitting right in front of the tv.

Building Ultra-High-End Fine Wooden Furniture. It's also a profitable side business, but it relaxes me. That's the only hobby of mine worth discussing with most of the WSO crowd because it's such an uncommon hobby.

Do you have your own tools/equipment? Are you in a big city or a suburb?

I loved woodworking all through High School and University. Made some damn good money making custom Adirondack chairs for people. I sort of let it fall to the way side since joining the workforce but I just moved to a place that has a co-working space nearby designed for product manufacturing and development. They have all the tools I would ever need and more. Really excited to get back in to it.

Recurve or compound? I set up a range in my yard and shoot recurve mostly. Working up to going hunting with a compound one day.

It's a commitment, true... That actually is sort of the point of a hobby, they're an appointment with yourself for some "me" time. Flying is serious business and it requires a fair bit of time. I feel very rusty after a few weeks on the ground. Once, after a few months off, I felt it was unsafe for me to fly alone, so I went up with an instructor. Totally nailed it, but it was worth having the instructor onboard to knock the rust off safely.

If you do take lessons, you need to commit to them. Once a month won't do it; you won't make any progress.

You need to fly, maybe, 25 hours a year just to keep it up.

One thing you can try is to take a vacation down in Florida where they have these ten day courses that get you a sport pilot license. That will get flying off your bucket list and after that, just take a lesson once in a while to keep your hand in it.

I see three 'worthy' hobbies as categories:

Two disclaimers first in the light of the abovementioned stuff (won't be any hardcore PC gaming, come on guys.. even more prolonged sitting at a fkin desk? - rather go play magic with actual ppl in person) (I very much liked the beers and whiskey's and shooting the shit by the bar type of idea. That's a hygiene factor in our business IMO.)

1.) Sports any (team\individual air\land\sea) 2.) Creative Arts Any form of music, painting, getting immersed in architecture whatnot; it could be something so specific as the designer joinery thing; would put cooking here 3.) Trivia Books, antiqueing, gardening, backpacking, guns, volunteering, hunting, golf (is not a sport)

At the end of the day this should not be a rational decision. You most absolutely have to regress for something that you gut-feel to be right for you.

PS.: whichever hobby you end up choosing, resist the temptation to gear up to a pro level because you may very well end up with an instrument\golf equipment\rifle\handyman tools gathering dust 3 weeks into taking the hobby up lol... we've all been there at some point

I have a tandem bike that I ride around on with Bernie (Weekend at Bernie's full size replica), glasses and all. I put Bernie on the back and we both go riding around the city. Its a blast.

I Truly believe first hobby/priority should be some type of intense exercise (lifting weights, tennis, swimming etc.) Despite the physical aspects, the mental clarity and energy boost is second to none. Endorphins are key.

Other activities I enjoy:

yoga, golfing, reading, Netflix, drinking, cooking, traveling, writing and socializing with the bros.

I find golf and trap shooting to be a good way to relax a bit and blow of steam, respectively. Not to mention, they are both great for networking while you have some fun.
