So, what are your opinions on the "Fearless Girl" statue? Am I the only person that is sort of pissed off and think it's just a PR stunt?

Pr stunt - state street has pending litigation against them from under paying many female workers compared to their male peers years back.
Somebody has been reading Barrons!
Nope - saw it on Yahoo!
So this is mitigation in the eyes of future female recruits??
I personally thought that it came out of nowhere. I remember waking up one morning and hearing people going crazy about it. I didn't realize that it was so easy to build a statue like that and put it next to the iconic bull.
While it looks good, I think that if State Street had worked with the city and other organizations some more, then it would have turned out a lot better.
I don't have an opinion on the girl statue.
But what we need is a BEAR STATUE facing the bull. Just like they have in front of the DAX (Frankfurt), and other exchanges globally.
Blind optimism is never healthy.

I think that a little girl defiantly standing in front of a frenzied bull is a terrible idea. Not only is that girl setting a dangerous example for future generations of women, but her ill-though-out protest can only serve to reinforce negative stereotypes.
Publicity stunt or not, I like the statue and what it stands for. However, my problem is that just the bull itself is an even more important statue which stands for something which has almost no representation in public spaces - strength of markets and the American economy.
I know that this is a little extreme, but it's sort of like putting a really cool statue that makes an excellent point next to the Statue of Liberty. Look that's great and all, but just leave something as iconic as the Bull or the Statue of Liberty alone.
On a side note, another things that bothers me about it is that although I like the Fearless Girl statue, it disrespects the original intent of the Bull statue. It's like making an amazing painting and then someone else comes in draws something completely unrelated on your artwork to make their point. Kind of jerk thing to do regardless of your point.
That little girl is blithefully ignorant of the fact that she is about to get trampled, and it comes off as ironic.
She doesn't even have a sword or a shield which would protect her. It's the dumbest statue i've ever seen.
PR stunt virtue signaling by a company being sued for underpaying female employees
Will likely be christened with my first ever fling of MS... But it's beyond stupid. The bull represents a growing US economy. The Latina girl (nice subtle touch there), representing affirmative action rubbish is quite literally, in a stand-off with a statue representing a surging economy.
Affirmative action on Wall Street is the biggest load of shit. Goldman Sachs shouldn't care what colour your skin is or who you're attracted to - but for the sake of not looking like some sort of evil monster in this PC world, they take these non-relevant factors into account.
Unsure what it's like in the US, but the BB and MC firms in Australia literally have scholarship recruitment programs purely for women. Why? Do women naturally / genetically make better Analysts? No? Then why is gender relevant...
Interestingly I've noticed lately that GS job apps ask for more detailed info about your personal "specs" than any other I've seen - race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Just insane.
It's like - "You cannot ask someone about their race, sexual orientation, or religion in an interview"... unless you promise to only use this information to discriminate against higher-achieving whites; then its fine.
I don't take issue with the notion of having a statue to encourage women to work on Wall Street.
I do take issue with the fact that a genuine piece of guerrilla artwork is being overshadowed by the flimsy PR stunt that State Street is pulling.
I think most people don't realize that the $360,000 bronze bull was placed on the streets without permission by Arturo Di Modica, on December 15, 1987 - as a Christmas gift to New Yorkers following the worst single day drop in stock market history. The artist intended it to memorialize the "strength and power of the American people". I, and many others, consider it to be one of New York's most iconic statues, right up there with the Statue of Liberty. Just as the gift from France enshrines this city's reputation as a gateway to the American dream, the gift from Di Modica is a metaphor for the aggressive optimism and prosperity of our capital markets, and is symbolic of the greatness of the American spirit.
The statue of the girl would be appropriate in another context, but in my opinion, its current placement is a rather disrespectful gesture which co-opts Di Modica's work and renders its complex and historical meaning into a rather one-dimensional image of "patriarchy".
Only noticed this statute after the guy pretended to bump it or something and all of the ladies flipped out. The bull is magnificent but who is really impressed by a small girl?
