Matt Levine is not at all indicative of the “mean” comp for journalists. I recall reading that he has some crazy contract with Bloomberg that basically lets him do whatever the hell he wants.

 

NYT times pays the most out of everyone because they can. They’ve poached Kara Swisher from ReCode and editors at Vox etc because they have the leverage to pay. I’m pretty sure they pay new hires and staff close to a 100k which is nothing in NYC but a lot better than other publications including WSJ and bloomberg. They’ve pulled off the move to digital better than anyone else and can afford to pay top dollar.
