What type of fishing should I get into?

I'm currently a junior in college with an equity research summer job lined up for next summer and hopefully, after graduation. I have always been passionate about fishing growing up and loved to bass fish in high school; unfortunately, college was a busy time and I didn't get to fish that much anymore.

Now that I'm done with recruiting, I want to get back into fishing. What type of fishing should I get into that is accessible for someone living in NYC and not super expensive or time consuming in get into? Gear-wise I only have my ultralight spinning rod right now so I would need to buy new gear. I'm not set on any specific species or fishing method (although I would have to learn fly casting).

Currently thinking about fly fishing or surf fishing or bass fishing. I slightly prefer fly fishing because a lot of finance people do it and it would be a great way of networking but it seems more expensive to get into. What are everyone's thoughts? Ideally I would get into all of them but I don't want to drop that much money on gear.

Get into whatever kind you prefer. When you're all sitting around shooting the breeze and you mention your latest bass tournament result, then someone else is going to mention that's awesome but let me tell you about my laast trip out west catching trout and you'd never believe what happened to my waders when I was in the stream! Then another colleague will chime in about how they finally took advantage of the orbiting phenomenon while out deep sea fishing for Snapper. At the end of it, you're all making handshake plans to go on each other's next trip because at the end of it you're all fishermen. Or a Striper trip since you mentioned surf fishing.

For some reason I thought OP had mentioned kayak fishing so I had that in my mind. Never done that before but have always wanted to.
