What would you do for a Million Dollars?
I read this simple article on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20130326114905-20017018-her… and thought of the theory "it takes 10000 repetitions to become an expert".
A lot of my peers have noticed the latest generation is lazy and feels they are entitled to be successful without doing the work. Without getting into HR issues, what are some of the best ways you have motivated these individuals?
Take an interest in them, offer to mentor them. Whenever I am assigned an intern or a new hire and I need them to do a boring, but important, time saving task like scanning a billion pages or printing 100 documents I make it worth their while.
"Hey man I need you to (insert boring brainless activity). Pretty exciting right! (overly enthusiastic with a bit of sarcasm, breaks the ice, makes them laugh and conveys that I know what its like and I've been there) I know it doesn't seem important, but (tell them how it fits into the big picture) so it needs to be perfect. If you do a good job, and you're interested, I'll teach you how to (some job function that is good to know but maybe isn't taught outright, or a tip or trick in excel etc. to make their life easier going forward) at the end of the day."
If they can't at least pretend to be appreciative of that then they don't really want to be there. Fire them and give the next kid a shot.
