Why do I have to wake up so early in Equity Research?

I’m currently a new associate at an Equity Research team.

I wanted to know how people manage to wake up so early everyday. I graduated university 3-4 months ago but am still on the nightowl sleep schedule where I’d stay up until 1am only to have to wake up at 5.

How did you guys adjust?

Ah, the early bird lifestyle of Equity Research, it's a tough transition, isn't it? But don't worry, you're not alone in this. Many people in the field have had to adjust their sleep schedules to accommodate the demands of the job. One of the main reasons for the early start is because the financial markets open early. As an Equity Research associate, you need to be up-to-date with the latest market news and trends before the trading day begins. This often means starting your day early to review overnight news, prepare for morning meetings, and get a head start on your research. As for adjusting your sleep schedule, here are a few tips that might help: 1. Gradually adjust your sleep schedule: Instead of making a drastic change, try going to bed and waking up 15 minutes earlier each day until you reach your desired wake-up time. 2. Create a sleep-friendly environment: Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool. Consider using earplugs or a sleep mask if necessary. 3. Establish a bedtime routine: This could include activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or meditating. The goal is to relax and signal to your body that it's time to sleep. 4. Limit exposure to screens before bed: The light emitted by phones, tablets, computers, and TVs can interfere with your body's production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. 5. Stay consistent: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This can help regulate your body's internal clock and make it easier to fall asleep and wake up. Remember, it's not just about getting up early, but also ensuring you're getting enough sleep to function effectively. So, prioritize good sleep hygiene and don't hesitate to seek professional advice if you're having persistent sleep issues. Good luck with your new role!
