WSO should have a comp/recruitment/ranking forum. Separate from the rest.
Don't get me wrong, WSO is invaluable for topics and questions when it comes to recruiting or compensation, but is anyone else getting tired of the constant "HoW dO I gEt InTo ThIs BaNk" or "HoW mUcH dOeS gOlDmAn PaY" questions? When I was in college, sure - cool. Those things were all I cared about. But now I'm actually working full time I seriously couldn't care less and understand the negative sentiment from the older users on this site.
They’re annoying but those threads pay the bills. They’re what draw in newbie users and get them to buy courses and shit
Yeah, put that way it makes sense
This forum is amazing for prospective domestic students, international students, expats, career changers in early life stages, and generally people who want to make a geographical move to another location (i.e. US -> UK).
It is not very useful if someone is significantly older, advanced in their career, or if they don't have an interest to read the 99th thread about visa delays, H1b or dating a colleague.
Younger people and new users find WSO through excellent google rankings and their interests are really around getting into school xyz, what is the ranking and how can they recruit afterwards. When all things are done - why would they be reading on here? Most people on here are great and interesting, but why write/read on a forum if you have achieved your goals the discussion board focuses on?
This resource is great for young people who still have goals ahead of them - for established folks it is a nice place to hangout, but it could also be a waste of time. Depending on how much time one has.
Because it would be nice to continue using the forum that I have come to love and appreciate.
As you said, most on here are cool and interesting. I'm still young and have a lot to learn. But I'm in that awkward phase where I cannot really give much value to young kids (lack of life experience) yet have a desire to learn from the oldies. That there is a lack of threads where I can learn from the oldies is my point of grievance.
I know it's a selfish take... just letting my frustrations be known
There used to be interesting threads with really awesome content everybody could learn from.
But I think the pandemic brought a generational shift across the internet and web boards like WSO. Young people lost two full years of growing up around clubs, bars and gas stations. Instead of socializing and meeting their first love they were forced to spend time at home with mobile devices, social media and other internet services. They had a lot of time to re-think their career approach and a chunk of these people found reddit, WSO and other forums. Some of them turned to trolling because they will never be a part of the lifestyle they are reading about, and others are in the very early stages of the journey called life. And for the first time, all of this is happening with a drastic change in the professional world (hybrid/WFH, and more).
Your thread is also forming a very philosophical question - quo vadis, WSO?
Temporibus commodi ipsa aut ratione molestiae. Nihil dolorum fuga eum ullam id.
