congrats on the newborn!

anytime I suffer depression I go back to activities that I know are good even though they don't directly attack the problem. do my chores, get my workout in, read scripture, help my wife with something. even if I'm still bummed out, at least I didn't turn into a lazy sack of shit (and yes, the motivation will be tough, but 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing), and eventually these small wins will help lift the fog of depression.

journaling also helps too, I find that even when it's just stream of consciousness it helps getting things off my chest

I'll pray for you brother, you got this!

Not much more than this for myself as well. If I could add anything, perhaps some nice cardio (e.g. running if you're into that, biking, swimming) in a nice locale (e.g., a regional park, around the city, the beach, etc.), and also some spiritual counseling/talking with a therapist if you're not religious. Being able to express and articulate your thoughts I've found can help a lot.

Congratulations on the newborn! I'm sure your wife finds strength and resiliency in you, no matter how tough it gets you are stronger than you think. Wishing your family well!

P.S.: This is more for the thebrofessor but others too: last night my parish priest was leading a talk about prayer routines, and someone asked about sloth/laziness during the day, and he basically advised what thebrofessor said above about trying to get back into the swing of things.

Do you have a history of depression or do you happen to feel down at the moment.  It sounds more like a temporary thing, which in that situation you can do things that would make you feel better.  Exercise releases endorphins, which can make you feel better.  When I feel down, I try to focus on things I like about myself and de-emphasize things I do not like about myself.  In other words, focus on the positives.

I hope you're not being serious. While alcohol can have some good social effects in moderation, finding solace at the bottom of a bottle is not good advice.

Drink

As a medical student, I feel obliged to warn you that alcohol

  • Increases risk for liver cirrhosis & liver carcinoma. Why? Your liver filters toxins and alcohol is a toxin. If your liver is under chronic stress the cells inside will adapt and become abnormal
  • Leads to hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and increased rates of cardiovascular disease. Why? Alcohol leads to decreased expression of certain hormones and the increased production of cortisol (a stress hormone) through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
  • Is not a cure to depression or anxiety.
  • Can impair brain function in the long term.

Perhaps you have never seen someone with jaundice. I have. It's not fun. Not something you want to have to deal with, being all yellow and slowly dying while waiting for a liver transplant you're not going to get. You would be physically weak, constantly tired, confused, ascites, oesophageal varices causing you to vomit blood.

Depression is complex and has many aetiologies, some medical, some physiological, and some psychological. Some causes include

  • Improper outlook on life. Perhaps you are chasing a dream that you cannot reach, or putting too much pressure on yourself.
  • Improper coping mechanisms to stress/excessive stress from a job.
  • Genetic reasons
  • Physical reasons (not enough sleep/nutrition/exercise)
  • Pathological reasons (other physical disease is causing lethargy i.e. liver failure, I wouldn't be surprised)

Best to see a therapist and find out the cause, then you could work on finding the cure.

Hey, I get it. Having a newborn can be really overwhelming. For me, talking to a therapist helped a lot, and sometimes just getting outside for a short walk makes a big difference. Hang in there!

Definitely get help from a therapist.

Personally I find embracing the emotion (sadness) in this case helps. We’re all not supposed to be happy all the time. Emotions come and go, some day/hour/minute you feel happy and some you feel sad. Instead of trying to hide from certain emotion, you can look at it in the mirror, accept it and live with it. We’ll all be ok.

As others on here have noted, there’s a strong connection between physical and mental health. I’ve found that running or lifting helps a lot for me - running especially. For me it’s not dependent on the volume of workout so much as the intensity. You probably don’t have much time in your day given the newborn (congratulations!) and work. If I was in your situation, I’d set aside 15 minutes to run until I couldn’t breathe. Pushing myself hard really helps.

Dealt with this loads it’s difficult but there’s an other side and systems you can put in place to make sure it’s not chronic.

1) Gym, run, nature, controlled breathing (make sure you are in good health)
2) Meditate / Prayer
3) Journal & practice gratitude
4) are you a bike toppled or are you pedalling hard? You are a goal striving mechanism make sure you have goals and are chasing them you can’t be idle!
5) connect with family , seek novel experiences, put yourself out there , read new subjects and books completely out of your spectrum
6) get into a hobby or sport that you can build on and see progress
7) Read a book called psycho cybernetics and how to monitor your thoughts for happiness/success (focus on this) subconscious programming.

1 & 2 are > 70% of the progress. Best of luck you are loved and im sure your son will be proud that you took the steps to acknowledge and be self aware of your emotions and tackle it head on - it takes a lot to bring it to the surface so good on you.

Echoing this. The top 3 things are >80% of it (betw gratitude and journaling I'd veer towards the former). I was mildly depressed when I was around 23, main cause was loneliness which I fixed by just making a ton more friends, reconnecting with old ones, etc. To this day, I'm very good about keeping in touch with friends & family and it's a habit I'll continue for the rest of my life. In past year while I haven't been depressed, I've felt myself teetering a little bit so I integrated habits 2 and 3 into my routine and got more serious on #1. In a good place now

Bear in mind, these techniques are meant to help you level set so that you can then focus on root cause of problem if there is one -- so once you're in a good headspace, what are you unhappy with in your life? Being fat, having few friends, a job that you hate, etc....then once you realize what those things are, get about fixing them. It's really a one-two punch IMO, do both steps to reap the maximum benefits

I'm literally going through an intense depression right now where every day I'm fighting off incredibly anxious feelings and someone actually had the audacity to respond "drink" and then try and justify it. Disgusting.
