Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about preparing for interviews like those at I Squared Capital, particularly for Summer Analyst (SA) roles:

  1. Behavioral Questions:

    • Expect classic behavioral questions such as "Walk me through your resume," "Why finance?" and "Why this firm?".
    • Be prepared to discuss your past experiences, strengths, weaknesses, and how you handle challenges or deadlines.
    • Tailor your answers to demonstrate reliability, quick learning, and a strong interest in the firm's focus areas.
  2. Technical Questions:

    • Technicals for SA roles are generally foundational but can vary in intensity depending on the firm. You should master the basics:
      • Valuation techniques (DCF, Comps, etc.).
      • Understanding of the three financial statements and how they interact.
      • Basic merger math and LBO concepts.
    • For infrastructure-focused firms like I Squared, it might be helpful to understand sector-specific valuation nuances, such as cash flow stability and regulatory impacts.
  3. Case Studies and Excel Tests:

    • Some firms include case studies or Excel-based tests in their process. These assess your ability to think critically, analyze data, and present logical conclusions.
    • Practice building simple models (e.g., DCF or LBO) and be ready to explain your assumptions.
  4. Key Preparation Tips:

    • Review sector trends and have a solid understanding of infrastructure investments, as this is I Squared's focus.
    • Be ready to discuss a deal or investment idea, showcasing your ability to analyze opportunities and risks.
    • Practice answering "pitch me a stock" or "if you had $100M to invest, where would you put it and why?" type questions.
  5. General Advice:

    • Be polished but approachable in your demeanor. Firms value candidates who are not only technically sound but also a good cultural fit.
    • Prepare thoughtful questions for your interviewers to demonstrate genuine interest in the firm and its work.

Good luck with your preparation!

I have seen a few people go through their process and it was pretty standard for an infra focused fund at the SA level. Expect a mix of basic modeling, simple case work and a lot of questions on why infra, why their strategy and how you think about long duration assets. They care more about clear thinking than flashy technicals.

It helps to review a few recent deals and be ready to talk about what makes a good asset in power, transport or utilities. The behavioral side is straightforward and mostly about fit and how you work under tight timelines.

no modeling or case work fyi idk where you’ve heard that (source: past intern)

I interviewed with some ISQ people very recently. I think this is mostly true.

They do care you actually know or like infra-assets and may ask you about them. Whether it is project-related or the broad strategy/strategic thinking.

Thankfully I have some infra experience, but not on the hardo-crazy IB / PE modelling side. I do have some exposure to PF modelling and whatnot.

They did give me a model test, which was a bit painful tbh, was a hybrid asset lol. So the build took a bit of time. Granted I didn't finish so I offered that they're free to test me further or can ask me more theoretical / real-life questions.

Behavioural/motivation - very much so they stress working hard, autonomous....etc. But I think any shop asks this lol, whether IB, PE , consulting etc.

Anyone know if they accelerate? I received a different offer, tried to accelerate with I Squared, and have heard no response despite having strong first and second round interviews. Also, any insight into what types of questions are asked in third round and if they have an in-person Superday component?

I interviewed last week for soph and was told offers come out before Christmas. I believe they're still interviewing people Monday and Tuesday this week so I'm guessing we'll hear Tuesday or Wednesday. Has anyone heard anything yet?

Those who get the offer will get emails mentioning feedback today
