Is LMM Boutique IB -> MM PE possible?
Do MM / LMM PE firms hire from small regional LMM boutiques?
Think of a shop with ~ 50 FTE, doing ~$4-20 million EBITDA deals. Currently an Analyst 3 and lateraled in with 2 years of EY transaction advisory experience. I’m holding an inactive CPA, CFA level 1 and series 79.
Would I need to lateral up to recruit for PE, or do I have a chance with my current background? Any advice is appreciated.
Swinging from the branches of the WSO forums, I've seen quite a few discussions about this. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what I can tell you:
Lateral Moves: It's not uncommon for professionals to move from LMM boutique investment banks to MM PE firms. Your experience at a shop with a focus on deals in the $4-20 million EBITDA range is relevant, especially if you've been hands-on with transactions.
Relevant Experience: Your background with EY in transaction advisory, coupled with your CPA (even if inactive), and CFA Level 1, adds to your profile's attractiveness. The Series 79 is the cherry on top, signaling your proficiency in investment banking.
Direct Recruiting: Some LMM PE firms may not always use headhunters and could recruit directly from investment banks, including regional boutiques. Your current position might already place you on their radar.
Networking: Don't underestimate the power of networking. Reach out to alumni, use LinkedIn, and attend industry events to get your name out there. Sometimes, it's about who you know as much as what you know.
Lateral to a Larger Firm: While it's not strictly necessary, lateraling to a larger firm could potentially open more doors and give you access to a broader network. However, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, and many have made the jump without this step.
For your follow-up question '1', let's dive a bit deeper:
Alumni Tracking: One informal way to gauge the potential for moving from a boutique to a PE firm is to track the career paths of alumni from your boutique on LinkedIn. See where they've landed and if there's a trend of moving into PE roles.
Quality of Deals: The quality and complexity of the deals you've worked on can be just as important as the quantity. Highlight any unique aspects of your deal experience in discussions with potential PE employers.
Prepare Your Story: Be ready to articulate your transaction experience, your role in the deals, and how your skills are transferable to a PE setting. Your story should be compelling and demonstrate your readiness for the PE world.
Remember, every monkey's journey is unique, and while there's no guaranteed vine to swing to MM PE, your background suggests you've got a good shot. Keep sharpening those skills and building your network. Good luck!
