Bachelor at HSG? (vs Bocconi vs RSM vs SSE & others)
Hello,
I am a high school student, naturalised in French-speaking Switzerland. As it is now the period of applications I am considering all the options for an Economics / Business bachelor in Europe. Graduating with a Swiss matura, HSG Assessment in English is my primary option. I am also considering RSM IBA, ESE IBEB, SSE Business & Economics, and Bocconi BIEM (I have sufficient grades to have a good shot at being admitted). I want an international career in Consulting / Tech (IB not being a priority).
My questions are:
1) Is the HSG BA in (mostly) English valued equally compared to the German one?
2) Will networking with English speakers be better in the more international schools, as HSG is mostly Swiss-German/German?
3) Are the internships and recruiting abroad comparable if I do not perfectly speak the local language?
4) Will going abroad be valued?
5) How do these schools compare in terms of getting into a top Masters?
Hey, if you want to specialize in tech & consulting. I would directly drop Bocconi, ESE and SSE. I would pick between HSG and RSM IBA. HSG has an excellent reputation in Switzerland (as you should know ;) ) but just checked and they have an international quota of 24% for their bachelor program (makes sense as they are protecting their school and degree from mass international invasion). Personally, I would pick RSM IBA as it is more tailored to tech & consulting than the others while being more international, as they have no quota for any nationality. Hope it helps :)
All can get you in the same masters considering you have good grades. However, a management degree will not allow you to enter a economics master while an economics could allow you to follow a management master (but depends on the courses as economics is very different to management).
Thank you for the answer!
Going abroad will of course be more valued more than staying in your home country but if you want to stay in Switzerland long term then I would recommend looking at going back for a master degree at HSG. If you don't speak German than you will have a hard time finding an internship in the German part where HSG is based but since you speak French you will find a job obviously in the French part. Hope it helps and sorry answered them in no particular order.
Don't go to RSM or ESE when you have other choices
Fragile job market, also weak placement in the good firms
How is the Netherlands a fragile job market??? Probably one of the strongest right now. UK is choas and France has major problems with strikes affecting all companies and a massive recession coming which will affect all countries btw ??

HSG will provide you with the same opportunities abroad as the other schools you have listed, if not better. For both jobs and Masters. Given you have done the Swiss matura, it will also allow you to build on your German so you will end up speaking French, German, and English which is a killer combo. Doubt you will be able to pick up Italian, Swedish, or Dutch as easily.
Lastly the job market in Switzerland is better than the other countries if you end up staying in the same country you did your uni in, and HSG has no rivals there.
Thank you for the input!
What do you think about LSE bsc management as an option?
Probably good if you can afford it, honestly from your position there are only three schools outside of Switzerland in Europe I would consider:
Oxford
Cambridge
LSE
The rest just ain't worth it versus the massive costs you would have to incur. Also want to reiterate: perfecting your knowledge of German will pay great dividends, do not underestimate it and take it into consideration.
Agreed but how good is your German? more B1 or A1/A2?
More B1 and currently taking lessons to get it to B2, so HSG seems like the most logical option in my case.
Personally I have never seen someone learning German and succeeding in top companies
You also need a profile in line with the taste of local German recruiters
German native speakers have a bulk edge of advantage over you: they graduate sooner from high school and have more and better internships than the students of other nationalities (several have Even Big4 M&A internships on their CV straight out of high School before even starting their Bachelor)
Furthermore French culture is different than German culture, if you learn German provided they hire you, you will be working only among Germans being the only international „croissant“, think if you can identity yourself in such an environment and if you can have success in such a place…
Team fit is fundamental for career success
So if you are not German I would never study in St. Gallen
St. Gallen is good for German switzerland and DACH but if you are of a different nationality, even french (that are second class EU citizens if compared to Germans regarding job prospects, but in that regard better than southern/eastern EU nationalities) I would not study in St. Gallen, better a French grande Écoles and work in French switzerland like Geneva or study in the UK, or pray for the US greencard
These are the best options
In that case, yes!
