Best schools for Texas IB/PE
Hi
I am a Senior in High School interested in high Finance. I would love to break into IB/PE/consulting in Texas after college. I will start applying to colleges this fall and wanted to know which unis are considered targets for Texas IB/PE/consulting. I'll be applying as an international and am aiming to get a major in Maths/Applied Maths/Statistics (and if possible, a double major in Finance/Economics).
Any universities that u guys know about will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for the advice!
Stay safe!
(ps. I hv a 1580 on the SAT and a ~3.8 gpa)
Rice, UT, A&M.
Rice and UT can be considered "semi-targets" under the normal definition, and I would call A&M a "semi-target" for Houston & Dallas IB/Consulting. Your profile looks like Rice to me (International, math).
thanks! do you have any idea about SMU or TCU by any chance?(i saw them being mentioned in some other posts)
Try to not go those, but if you can’t get into UT/Rice go to SMU as a backup.
TCU has been “up and coming” for like a decade now but I don’t think things have gotten meaningfully better. Probably in line with Baylor but a definite step below UT/Rice/SMU/A&M.
SMU is decent for Texas banking. Certainly better than A&M but not quite as good as UT or Rice.
UT/Rice for sure. But I would say A&M after those if you join the right programs. A&M has a larger alumni base than SMU & TCU which can put you at an advantage.
A&M has made leaps and bounds the past few years in placements, the finance department has poured a substantial amount of time/money in expanding their footprint in banking. The Aggies on Wall Street Program has been transformed the last couple years and has near 100% placement rate, led by an HBS and ex-DLJ banker who is incredibly well connected in finance (in past years students have gotten a personal 3 hour round table discussion with John Gray and Tony James). In addition, the Horizons Program (student/alumni banking prep club) has led to a significant increase in banks coming to campus, (all Houston offices) something they never really did before and banks are guaranteeing interview slots to A&M now which a couple years ago was not the case. On top of all that there is much less competition for banking compared to UT, UT obviously places significantly more and is a true semi target and Houston target, but the pool of A&M people who go for banking/consulting is much much less as corporate finance/big 4 accounting are the main paths desired. So if you want banking/consulting and will put in the time you will not just be fine, but likely will land multiple superdays.
thanks for the great advice! but do the banks that come for OCR look specifically for recruits from Mays(the b-school) or is it throughout A&M as a whole?Cuz I want to pursue an applied math/math degree.. with either a minor or double major in finance(not sure whether the double major might be possible cuz of the clg policy)
If you're wanting to go the applied math route, you should 100% look into their "STEM To Stocks" 4+1 Masters in Finance Program, you can apply for accelerated admissions your junior year and spread your masters out over a couple years to lighten the course load. Many engineers/other stem majors have completed the program and successfully leveraged it into banking jobs. Banks know the rigor A&M's STEM curriculum provides so that definitely won't be an issue.
I'm not positive how it works for Mays but at UT being in the business school definitely gives you a leg up. The majority of resume drops and OCR is posted only on the McCombs career portal. Not 100% sure but I'd assume it would be similar for A&M/Mays.
Also at least at UT I've seen plenty of kids do math/applied math double majors with Finance so it is definitely a viable option and you can still graduate in four years assuming you're coming in with AP/IB credits.
While all the above schools are "good schools", especially if you are looking to be in Texas after graduation, the real answer to the question "what unis are considered targets for Texas IB/PE/consulting?" is that the best schools - nationally - are the main targets. Any school in the top 20ish will all help you get your foot in the door as much, and if not more than any of the Texas schools (exception maybe Rice, which is consistently ranked in the top 20 itself), unless you are in some sort of Honors program and/or specialized track.
In my opinion...
Agree TAMU punches above its weight, but the experience there would be awful. UT/Rice are the clear top and I'd argue those in the alternate program at SMU are comparable candidates.
