Columbia GS

Hi everyone! This platform has been very helpful to me since I got here so wanted to ask a question.

I’m a community college student in nyc n I got into Columbia GS for fall 2022 which I deferred to spring 2023 to transfer more credits. Columbia gave me lil scholarship, but still I will be paying around $80k in tuition for 2 years. With room and board it will be around $120-$130k in private loan debt with 10-11% interest as I can’t get federal loans. I have another option to go to Baruch's Zicklin school of business where tuition will be around $15k for 2 years. For either of them, I will have to take out private loans.

I was waitlisted at Dartmouth college for fall 2022 but didn't get in unfortunately. I wanna get into IB after I graduate. Also, I don't just wanna study and not socialize because at my cc I have no social life. I have another option to defer Columbia to fall 2023 and apply to top schools again. What do you all think I should do? Your help will be immensely valuable!! Thanks!

Cant comment on anything other than Columbia GS but I will say that if your goal is IB, I’ve had a relatively easy time getting interviews + the network has been great. I’m a liberal arts major and was constantly getting invited to put in an app and had a relatively decent conversion rate to interviews with a little bit of networking. Honestly everyone I knew that wanted an IB SA position left the recruiting cycle with an offer in hand (even if it wasn’t at their top choice). Just my 2 cents

CC transfer student here who went to Zicklin. If IB is your goal, it's going to be both a lot of work and a decent amount of luck involved; not to sound discouraging. If you defer to Fall 2023, you'll also be reducing the time you'll have to build a solid network and develop the technical skills come recruiting. Being a transfer student is difficult because CC does not have the tools to help you in that regard, and you'll need to hit the ground running. Lastly, Zicklin will in no way, shape, or form provide you with a college undergraduate experience. Even as a participant in numerous clubs, it cannot compare to any traditional university. Being a CC transfer makes the process that much more difficult, but it can be done. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply! I know that I wouldn't get the traditional college experience at Baruch n that's y I applied to other schools. And yes, CC transfer process is hard but that's what I have to deal with. U say it's challenging to get into IB from Zicklin but how hard can it be? Because I when search on LinkedIn there a lot of people on the street from Baruch. N do you mean if I defer my admission to Columbia to fall 2023 will reduce my chances to build networks or other schools?
