UCL or St Andrews?

I am trying to decide which uni I attend. At St Andrews I would study Financial Economics while at UCL I would study History, Politics and Economics. I also plan to come back to the US (where I currently live) to work. I want to work in IB or real estate in NYC and want to know which school would be best for recruiting. One possible benefit of St Andrews is the high number of American graduates who return to America to work, so theres definitely a larger network. On the other hand UCL is generally considered a target school in the UK, which St Andrews is not due to its distance.

Neither will get you to NYC (better go to a US school for that). Of the two UCL is a target for London IB, while St Andrews isn't, so I'd go to the former if I were you

Yes, but recruiting in the US is structured in such a way that recruiting from a non-US school, even as a US citizen, is virtually impossible (even for Oxford candidates and other top targets). Pan-European Monkey had a great post on this topic in another thread I believe. So what you want to do is recruit for London IB and eventually transfer to the NY office

here is my two cents #1 choose the major that you’re passionate about and then your university will follow #2 i strongly believe if you plans is to work in NYC then go to a US if your smart enough to get accepted in UCL then I think u can get into a good American college. but if u decide to stay in the UK i would choose UCL great school with a great reputation plus you are based in london which makes things easier for networking, internships, spring weeks etc

in that case go to ucl have fun i mean its london at the end of the day one of the best cities in the world. land a job then try to transfer into the US because I believe its easier to land a job when you are more experienced. but if you really want to go to NYC maybe work a couple of years in london then do an mba in the US.

It doesn't work like that.

IB is a highly structured recurring process. Sure, non-targets can network themselves into interviews by convincing one of their few non-target alums to support them in the process. But who is going to support you from abroad? Even if you find someone from UCL in NYC (or another school) who talks to you, do you think they're going to put themselves on the line to get you an interview? The first thing anyone in NYC is going to say when they see your CV is: why aren't you focused on the LDN office? If you wanted a NYC job, why didn't you go to a school in the US? Even if you find a rando alum or someone from NYC to push you to a super day interview, every single person is going to question why you aren't focused on LDN. Going to undergrad abroad near a major finance center and trying to get a job in another country after just doesn't make much sense.

Get an IB job in LDN after UCL, then transfer to the US. Such a more straight forward path. Plus, LDN is a great city to live in!

Good luck!
