University Student Looking for Advice on Seeking out Internships/Coffee Chats with Established Professionals
Hello,
I am a mathematics student going into my second year at the University of Toronto looking to plan my internship applications for next year. I have demonstrated interest in asset management/analyst work, and am a portfolio manager at the University of Toronto Sustainable Investment Fund and columnist for the fund's newsletter where I write on financial modelling. I have also had some prior experiences in Wealth Management and Private Equity during the summer following my Grade 12 year of high school, although these were not legitimate internships and were more the type that you would give to your son's friend to show them the ropes. This summer I am working in Toronto in a leading client-development position for an app startup, although the role does not particularly pertain to finance. The only downside that I am currently facing is that my grades took a little bit of a hit towards the end of first year, and I am now facing a sub par GPA in the lower 3.0 range. I have very strong interpersonal skills and know if I were able to set up coffee chats, make connections in capital markets departments, and plan things out correctly, I can make things happen for this coming application season. My question to all the finance professionals out there is how you recommend I go about planning out the application season/setting up meetings with established industry professionals? I am not in the Rotman commerce program so it is difficult for me to get access to the resources they have there, and I have to do all of the work to make things happen by my lonesome. I am willing to accept any advice you have to give me, thank you for hearing me out.
runoffgeorge, hey, look at the bright side, at least you didn't get a ton of monkey shit thrown at you...here is my best guess on threads that might be helpful:

If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
I would take as many classes as your school allows this summer to get GPA up. Sub 3.0 is pretty much a definite no and even a 4.0 next semester won’t increase it enough. The internship you have planned this summer might be interesting but won’t get you towards finance internship next year and it is WAY less important.
The GPA would be my only focus this summer.
Agreed
Really appreciate the advice. Happy to be able to come back two years later with good news - I managed to get my GPA up, and am about to start an IB summer with a very solid group in Toronto. I got a middle office VC role last summer, and was able to take away some good learnings on approaching recruitment + networking. My focus now is to secure the full-time return, and work on making it to NY from there.
