Q&A: Incoming FT First-Year S&T Analyst From Someone Who DIDN'T Intern in S&T
Hi guys,
This site has been really helpful to me during recruiting and throughout my time in college so I wanted to give back and do an AMA to offer advice to current students who are going through/about to start recruiting. I'm an incoming first-year Analyst in Sales & Trading and graduating from college in May.
S&T was always my career choice, BUT I didn't intern in it this past summer because I couldn't get any internships in it – much less get any internship. However, I was able to secure a Summer 2021 internship in a sort of Middle Office role that had nothing to do with FO at a BB at the end of the recruiting cycle for Summer 2021. After the internship, I recruited full-time for S&T – I was able to get 3 offers before accepting 1 of them.
I'll list some stuff about me below:
- Current senior at an undergraduate target school – (UMich / NYU Stern / Cornell Dyson)
- Finance major with 2 non-business minors
- Went from barely getting a Summer 2021 internship in something that I didn't like to getting multiple full-time S&T offers
- Struggled a bit academically in school
Drop some questions and I'll be more than happy to answer them – I'll also answer any PMs I get!
Did you lateral internally after you received your offer? And If so how did that process look.
Did you lateral internally after you received your offer? And If so how did that process look. How did the FT process look, also looking at possibly making a switch.

Someone just shot a machinegun in here eh
Was thinking the same thing hahaha
I also had a similar path to s&t, but I most recently interned in RE. What products are you looking at within the s&t space? Personally, I have a more macro outlook so rates, fx interest me, but also structured products is another desk that I would be willing to see.
I'm looking mainly at Equities, Fixed Income, and Structured Products – ideally, I'd like to be on the Electronic desk since that desk is experiencing double-digit growth each year across the street and I have a bit of a coding background which can help potentially weather out any downturn

What are some of the most important things you need to learn before starting a role in S&T? It can be financial modeling, how to price different financial instruments, bid-ask pricing strategy for Sales and traders, etc? Thanks.
lol >1/2 this thread is people asking the same question.
What happened to your 2021 internship? Why didn't you like it?
Hey, can I PM you?
