Chartered Market Technician
I was wondering what you all thought of the CMT designation... I will be hanging out in graduate school for the next while and I was thinking of taking CFA and CMT exams simultaneously to help me move into trading. I will be interning doing various things also. I just want to know if the CMT is considered valuable, and if there are other exams I should consider. CMT is recognised by NYSE and NASD and seems to provide a thorough education in technical analysis, a field I am interested in. Thanks for your advice.
Do not expect this board to give the CMT any respect, im posting this as a warning to you because i have seen how people react to subjects related to TA. I think more than BB recognition what you as an individual are able to get out of the program matters more than what a BB thinks. Once you make trader and start generating a great PnL they dont care how you are making the money as long as you continue to make it. Use the CMT program to learn TA if it interests you. I certainly dont see it being a hindrance unless the bank as a whole is anti TA.
I have considered going for my CMT also, if you are interested in being a trader i see it being much more useful than a CFA since in the short run TA is more useful than financial analysis.

Also in terms of recognition, there is another charter called CFTe, which one is more recognised?

Apparently you can do it while in school and is meant for technical analysis. I know the CFA is the most recognizable but would CMT help much at all with familiarity? I intend on doing the CFA later on when I'm a senior. The CMT also has much less of a time commitment so I was thinking I could try to go through a level or 2 while in college. It doesn't appear that they are as timing restrictive about this as the CFA is.
It's not a particularly well known designation, and 100% useless for banking. Honestly if I came across an analyst candidate who had it, I'd ask why they bothered and if they even understood what we do. People who have it tend to be more institutional sales or market strategist types.
So primarily for industries that are involved with equities? Hedge funds, Mutual funds, Sales and Trading?

In my experience, the answer is no... I have only ever met one CMT certified trader and he was at a bank.

Believe it not, I was once applying for a job at a bulge bracket bank and it said on the preferrered skills... CMT designation. So right now, I wouldn't waste my time, If I were you, Probably wait in the future. I'd probably commit my time to something that is more recognized like the CFA, CIPM, FRA... etc... really depends what you are going for.
From what I've heard from professionals, it's not bad to have it, but they will take someone with a CFA over a CMT any day
Over $1400 to become a Level III bullshitter sounds like quality money spent to me.

How hard is the CMT 1? I have my CAIA and thought that was pretty easy. I am taking the first level of the CFA in December and am about 40% done studying. I was told by a CMT that the CMT 1 is easier than the Series 7.
I know that its not the most useful designation but I am curious about technical analysis and think it could be interesting. Thanks

Taking the text in November and I can honestly say I will pass the exam and it took me a week to get to the point where I felt comfortable. Cool stuff to learn but most non tech people laugh at you when you try to talk about it
How come it takes only a week to feel comfortable about passing the exam (Level-1)? smart dude! there are about 4 books each having over 500-600 pages to review.
