Fintech to S&T

Hi everyone,

I had a question about a career change to Trading or Structuring from Fintech.

Quick background: I graduated from a top 40 university in Summer 2022 with a triple major in Math, CS, and Econ. I had internships in wealth management and proxy solicitation. For the past year, I’ve been working in fintech at a company in the securities lending space as a business analyst on the Trading Team, which has exposed me to repos, swaps, and options. I plan on taking the SIE later this month and the CFA Level 1 exam in February. I’m also about to finish a NYU Certificate in Real Estate Investment.

From my work, I’ve developed a strong interest in both Structuring and Trading. Is one of these roles "easier" to break into from my current position? I think I’d be more interested in Structuring, and from what I’ve read, it seems like I could pivot into Trading from Structuring if I decided to switch later. I’d really appreciate any advice on this.

I understand that beggars can’t be choosers, but I also find the idea of exotics very intriguing. I’m unsure how feasible this might be, given my background and the potential difficulty of making such a switch.

Thank you!
