I'm So SCREWED!! (Please HELP!!)

I am supposedly an S&T summer intern at major European Investment Bank. The internship started last Wednesday, but I can't go to work now, and maybe forever!!

I need a EAD card (work permit) to work since I'm an international student. I recieved an approval notice for my employment, but actual EAD card got lost in mail. HR person said she can't take approval notice, but needs an actual EAD card according to U.S. law. And U.S. gov says, in order to get replacement EAD card, it takes up to 90 days which means end of my internship!! I asked the employer whether I can just work unpaid, but she said I can't even do that..

I finally got my dream S&T internship during my junior year, and was so excited to start working. But this immigration BS is threatening my internship!! I feel like it's end of the world.. And I can't even look for another job bc they are done with the recruiting!! What should I do now??

I'm so screwed guys... I really need any advices/help...

You know your on WSO a lot when this cracks you up. I tried explaining it to my GF, but no luck. One of the more funny things I have read on here.

To ZIRH: Thanks for your advice!!

But, my school (NYU Stern) doesn't have CPT and they can't change the policy this year. I asked my employer whether I can just work for credit instead (which means I have to PAY for the internship), but they don't even allow me to do that..

I feel like every institution has their policies and have absolutely zero flexibility for a student/intern like me with no power.

I'll definitely ask them whether they can transfer me to Korea or Canada (since I'm Canadian permanent resident), or even HK/Singapore(if possible), but since they've been so strict about their policies, I'm not sure whether they are willing to do that.

Write a couple of letters to the USCIS and try to get a replacement EAD card as soon as possible. No matter where you work, even if it's a voluntary position, you will need the EAD card.

Try calling the USCIS as well. In my experience, they're not that inefficient.

I applied for replacement of EAD card last week, and they told me it will take 90 days to process the application. I called USCIS so many time that I can even recite their 30 minutes introductory speech. But, I stopped calling them after I found out that they are just a company hired by USCIS to answer people's calls and read off the same script over and over..

I would recommend talking to as many people as you can at the USCIS or other relevant agency and try to expedite the process. My experience with any kind of bureaucracy is that you can get very different answers depending on who you speak to within the organization (due to misinformation, subjective nature of criteria or even just their whims). Be courteous but assertive and let them know how important the situation is. Another avenue is seeing if the bank will let you transfer your internship to somewhere in Asia.

yea, ask if you can transfer the offer to Korean... you don't need an EAD man... just go to your college and ask for the CPT form asap! Sign up online for an internship class and ask HR if you can do it for free... i almost had my offer rescinded during the last week of school cos my firm doesn't hire international students, and they didn't know I wasn't an US citizen, but they were nice enough to let me continue my internship and would sponsor my H1-B if I got the fulltime offer. I know how you feel now, but I'm SERIOUS BOUT THE CPT and Internship class thing... call you college's office of international services to find out...

Macquarie doesn't sponsor. I had a call from HR and she asked me about my citizenship status, and told me they never hire non-locals...

The firm I'm working at now made an exception for me, and I feel really indebted to them, because the HR lady went out of her way to make things work for me... Huge scare and sigh of relief, like getting an offer twice.

@hur5249: The HR lady for my firm did ask me if I could work without visa issues at any of the other international offices, so I'm pretty sure they can do that, esp since u're @ UBS/CS/Barclays/Rothschild...

Good luck man...

I really wouldn't bank on USCIS expediting the process. Try giving them a call, it might work. If your EAD is already approved, then printing and shipping a new card shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks so I'm not sure why they gave you the 90-day figure. If you do get through to USCIS, tell them you have a job offer that depends entirely on getting this card on time.

Maybe you should spend 10 minutes imagining what life would have been like if you had been born on the other side of the 38th parallel.

You'd probably have shot yourself 10 times over if getting a delayed EAD signals the "end of the world"...
