Should I get a CFA as trader?

For context, I'll be joining an EM FI and CDS desk in a few months for a full-time position at a top firm on the sell-side. Wondering if working toward a CFA is worth it for the long-run career optionality, or even just for the knowledge I'd gain in the process of studying for it. Majoring in Econ/Finance undergrad, if that's helpful.

Strong opinions are welcome.

Very similar bank/position as you, and almost finishing the CFA curriculum. I did 0 finance/econ in uni then started straight as a FI trader, at the start nothing makes any sense to me. CFA was quite useful to fill the knowledge gap.

But in terms of the program itself, nope it has added 0 value to my career so far. You don't get promoted faster, and you don't get more respect for it.

I’d say if you did finance/econ degree then don't bother with it, I'd rather spend that time getting good at the job/expand network/have a life, any one of them will probably advance your career more.

If you really want to study, I know a guy who did finance for undergrad, working a full time job and reading a part time masters in data science - pretty impressive to us all, and definitely more respected than me doing the CFA!

Think a CFA is an unofficial requirement in AM (someone with more exp please feel free to correct me). But in trading most of the stuff you learn on the desks. Having a CFA on your resume is definitely impressive since it means you have a basic finance knowledge but it wont get you in through the door usually. Have seen many non CFA folk do well while CFA folk not do well and vice versa tbh.
