UK Degree apprenticeship decision - Help please!!

Hi, I am 18 years old in UK aiming for Sales and Trading/Global markets.

I have received a "Corporate Banking" degree apprenticeship with Barclays- involves a degree in Financial Services from the LIBF.

I have received a Level 7 (masters) apprenticeship with EY in their Financial Services Audit and Assurance - Study ACA.

I have Maths and Economics undergraduate degree offers from Bristol and Leeds uni.

If I am aiming to work in S&T/GM, what would be the best to do: Barclays Corporate Banking, EY Assurance, or a Maths & Econ degree at semi-target?

Cheers for your help!

To aim for Sales and Trading (S&T) or Global Markets (GM), here's how your options stack up:

  1. Maths & Economics Degree at Bristol or Leeds (Semi-Target):

    • This is likely your best option for S&T/GM. Investment banks often recruit for these roles from universities with strong quantitative programs. While Bristol and Leeds are semi-targets, a strong academic performance, relevant internships, and networking can make you competitive.
    • Additionally, a Maths & Economics degree provides the quantitative foundation that is highly valued in S&T/GM roles.
    • You can also leverage spring weeks, summer internships, and extracurricular activities (e.g., finance societies, trading competitions) to build your profile.
  2. Barclays Corporate Banking Degree Apprenticeship:

    • While this offers practical experience and a degree, corporate banking is not directly aligned with S&T/GM. Transitioning from corporate banking to S&T/GM would be challenging, as the skill sets and networks differ.
    • However, if you excel in the apprenticeship and network internally, there might be opportunities to pivot within Barclays, though this is not guaranteed.
  3. EY Financial Services Audit and Assurance Apprenticeship (Level 7):

    • This apprenticeship is even less aligned with S&T/GM. Audit and assurance focus on accounting and compliance, which are far removed from the trading floor.
    • While the ACA qualification is prestigious, it is more relevant for roles in accounting, consulting, or corporate finance rather than S&T/GM.

Recommendation:

  • Primary Choice: Pursue the Maths & Economics degree at Bristol or Leeds. Focus on achieving top grades, securing internships in S&T/GM, and building a strong network.
  • Backup Plan: If you prefer earning while learning, the Barclays apprenticeship is a better fit than EY for your S&T/GM aspirations, though it still requires significant effort to transition into your desired field.

Good luck, and remember to leverage every opportunity to network and gain relevant experience!

Cheers - I'm guessing your thought process is that you need a quantitative degree to do S&T/GM and that because LIBF is dead uni and dead degree then transition would be tough, is that still the case despite having the corporate banking 4 years work experience as well? (I know that a non quantitative degree from LIBF would have no chance for S&T/GM but does the CB work experience boost at all your likelihood??) - Thanks btw!
