Barclays London IBD - Insight on Groups
Hello guys, I'm a long time user that just set up a new account for this thread.
First of all, a big shout-out to the WSO community that has been extremely helpful over the years.
I was wondering if anyone could shed a light on the various IBD Groups at Barclays, London office.
I've found some threads about it on the forum but they were either for the USA or quite old, hence I would like to see if I can get more recent info.
I do not have a clue about where I would like to be in 5+ years: PE, Corp Dev, consulting, still in IB... these are all attractive options.
Therefore, I believe avoiding "specialised" teams like FIG or Real Estate would be better (or am I wrong?).
Culture is much more a factor than hours.
Apart from that, I am willing to consider everything: Coverage, ECM, LevFin... that's all good.
Some groups I am looking at are:
- Industrials
- TMT
- Healthcare
- Consumer Retail
- Leveraged Finance
- UK country team (but I am not British, if it may be relevant)
It would be awesome if anyone has some insight to share!
Thanks a lot guys!
LevFin is strong, so is chemicals from what i've heard.
Thank you so much! potatohead123
Anyone else have some insight?
LevFin I believe is the strongest
Thank you a lot! @all3n"
Do you happen to have info on any other group?
Bump - would love to have any additional info!

Best IB divisions at Barclays, London (Originally Posted: 01/11/2018)
Hi everyone!
I'm an incoming IBD summer analyst at Barclays in London and wanted to ask which divisions within Barclays are the best to work for, in terms of culture and number of deals with regards to pitches/prestige. I have not worked in IBD so far, any insight will be therefore highly appreciated.
As a summer analyst, I can choose among Industry or Country CFMA (Corporate Finance + M&A), FIG or Global Finance and Risk Solutions (DCM, ECM, Leveraged Finance). I have been mostly thinking about putting Consumer Retail CFMA and/or Healthcare CFMA as my top options, perhaps with DCM as the third one. However, I do not have much insight on how active these sectors in the UK/EMEA area currently are, specifically which ones does Barclays specialise in.
Thanks for any insights!
Interested as well

Shout out from an incoming summer analyst at Barclays across the pond!
But to answer your question, I think in a vacuum Healthcare CFMA would be more enticing just for the increasing importance of the industry and how often it changes (just my uneducated take). As far as which group's deal flow is better I would definitely lean on the people you networked with during the hiring process. That definitely helped me in choosing which offer I was interested in, so I'm sure for something specific like this is it is even more paramount. Good luck either way.

bump, am also at Barc this summer
I have never worked at Barclays so take it with a pinch of salt. Have some insight on UK / M&A team which I understand to sit together. You will struggle to get into those teams if you are not a Brit. A lot of the time they hand pick their interns / A1 to be the ones that went to Eton and Oxbridge thereafter. Having a posh accent would help. From speaking to two people who interned at that team the culture is quite bad, not a lot of support for the interns. You are left on your own to do your summer project. I would personally avoid but if you went to Eton maybe that’s your thing.
Heard FIG has a good culture. Nat Res is a sweatshop but that’s pretty much everywhere.
