I don't know how do you define a semi-target, but I did receive a lot of interviews from top tier AM firms(BlackRock, Fidelity etc) in the SA recruiting season. So i think it's possible if you can demonstrate your passion of investing in your resume/application. Also people from AM firms told me they do not really care that much about the previous internship experience as long as you have the "true" passion of investing.

I've been turned down by a couple AM shops in my home down ( internships because though they could clearly see my passion for the markets/investing, I didn't have the modeling experience they needed their interns to have.

Definitely wouldn't be a bad call to either take the BIWS modeling course(s) or spend the summer doing ER and then going after an AM internship.

Well if you are more of a fundamental investor then a quant fund with intensive modeling focus may not be a good fit... I am not a quant, so when I happened to interview with one of the quant teams at BlackRock (cuz I didn't know when i applied), it was really not a good experience lol

Most traders move over to AM and do portfolio management which has some aspect of research but obviously is more of a trading role.

I have met people who have went from S&T to AM and vise versa at the BB I am starting at in July.

The position is more of a research/strategy role. Is it possible, or have traders been able to move over and do strategy in AM? I am leaning towards trading as I want to learn about it for a couple of years, but my ultimate goal is to work in AM. Will HR and people in the group you turn down, scorn you once full time hiring comes around or after a few years?
