By when should you know that you're interested in finance?
Before college? Freshman year? Later?
I'm a freshman at a top target, hopefully a statistics major. Since about two years ago, I've been interested in consulting. (My sister's at MBB, so I've heard a bit about it from her.) Ever since I started college, though, I've felt like there are WAY more finance opportunities than consulting ones, which is pushing me to consider i-banking, etc.
Except I don't know anything about finance. Not really. I've been helping my boyfriend prep for interviews, so I "understand" DCFs, links between financial statements, etc. but it all feels like cardboard knowledge. When I read WSJ, etc. I often feel like things are passing over my head.
Is it realistic to aim for finance internships for sophomore year? Should I already have a good grasp on how the markets work? Should I just shelf the idea of finance entirely?
Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if this isn't posted in the right place.
If you've seen a DCF or read WSJ regularly, you know more than most freshmen who end up in finance.
I will be starting my FT finance job this summer and I still don't know if i'm interested in finance.
I've been working in IB for 18 months and still don't know if I'm interested in finance.
jk, but seriously take it easy. Take a few classes that you think may interest you and go from there. BTW, I was a Maths/Stats major, and didn't know what DCF even meant until my junior summer.
OP, I feel the same way, except I'm a junior currently hunting for a SA position.
I think my previous bank internships just strengthened my foundation and interest in Finance.
I can perform; it's just hard getting in that SA door. Keep positive and keep pushing.
theres no certain time...subjective and happens to everyone. Enjoy college
Bro, if you're asking this question you have a problem. I was browsing the investing portion of the NYTimes and made my first investment in Sirius Satellite with money I made caddying on the weekends when I was 13.
If you enter finance to just make money, you're doing it for the wrong reason...do what you like!
