Calgary IB Fulltime Hiring

Hi Everyone,

I'm a current master's student studying at a target school (Ivy) in the states and I want to go back home to Calgary after I graduate. I did my bachelor's degree in engineering in Canada.

Could anyone share some insights on IB full time recruiting in Calgary? I know other threads on this site covers full time recruiting, but from what I've heard Calgary recruiting at some firms tends to be less structured.

In particular:
-With the oil and gas prices down, are banks going to be hiring this summer/fall for full time analysts starting next year?
-When do job postings come out?
-How will the banks view my master's degree? (Will banks view me as less "committed" because I did my master's degree in the states?)

Thank you!

FT 2019 recruiting will likely begin in the summer.

O&G not as bad as it used to but there are limited financing opportunities for banks with little investor appetite (even though the commodity itself is performing quite nicely relative to the equities) so there will so likely not be quite the hiring boom but not as bad as it has been.

Masters is mixed, banks love the undergraduates out of school because you can work them hard for a relatively cheap salary. But at same time it never hurts to have great education and an American Ivy will stand out.

Don't hesitate reaching out to the smaller shops in Canada, most of the O&G deals will be done by them and provide high upside to bonus potential.

Depends on your experience level of course though, did you do banking/markets before?

Thanks for your insights Inthepeleton!

I'm doing my master directly out of undergrad so no full time experience, but I have a few O&G internships. I will most likely do an IB internship over spring and summer (albeit it'll be with a small boutique...) Do you think that would be enough experience?

Yes I would says so but also depends on the boutique/type of sector exposure but in the end its all about networking. I'd start actively reaching out for coffee/beer/lunch chats over the summer at prospective firms.

BB's in Canada are very focused on GPA, if very high you will likely fly into the interview process but a high GPA won't keep you around long during the interviews.

Boutiques will take on a more varied background but also less regimented recruiting so being active networking gives you better odds of success there.

would say that this dude as long as he doesnt mess up badly in any interview is in a greatp osition to land something in calgary.

reach out to all the everyone you are bound to land something given your strong background

full time hiring is generally a lottery draw generally the banks hire on an as-needed basis. there is very unlikely to be a regimented recruiting process

your best bet is to start reaching out to all the banks now to get on their radar keep your eye on job boards for postings and check in every now and then to see if manpower is needed

think your masters degree will play quite well given your technical background, i think there is more of an emphasis on technical knowledge in calgary and houston vs new york and toronto. o and g is the citys bread and butter

Trying to do the same through Calgary and Houston... Bummed that no one gave you feedback. How'd it work out for you last fall?

Answers to your particulars: -With the oil and gas prices down, are banks going to be hiring this summer/fall for full-time analysts starting next year? ---> Good question - I know JP Morgan M&A was #1 in Calgary last year with over $4B in M&A I believe. Simply because O&G prices down do not exclude M&A activity. Companies can simply adjust prices for these acquisitions. Not sure how this effects ECM/DCM.

-When do job postings come out? ---> I would connect directly with bankers in Calgary offices to talk to them about 1) your interest and 2) these questions because then you won't risk being one of many who applies through the postings - you will have someone who can vouch for you if you network appropriately.

-How will the banks view my master's degree? (Will banks view me as less "committed" because I did my master's degree in the states?) ---> I have no objective info on this. You could get hired at a bank in the USA and take a transfer to Calgary (worst case?).
