European - Things to do in NY during training

Hi All,

Was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations on things to do whilst in NY during July.

Any particular restaurants/bars you would recommend booking a table at (not necessarily super expensive, but just nice, well-known)?

Any activities you might recommend?

Weekend plans - any nice areas around NY to visit for a day trip? What about flights to nearby east-coast cities (is it reasonable to expect to leave early-mid afternoon on a Friday)?

Thanks!

I've always liked biking around Manhattan, on the water. There is a bike lane. I used to do it on my roadbike, but those Citi bikes are not bad too that you can rent with a credit card.

I rode around with my friend around the edge of the city on a Citi bike last year. They are really heavy. I couldn't bunny hop at all. They seem pretty durable/reliable though. Def. was fun for a couple of hours.

Miami is a 3hr flight - usually $200-$250 roundtrip

If you are looking to get the sight seeing experience, downtown is pretty fun. Could take a ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, hit up Wall Street quick and then go to the top of the freedom tower. If you are looking for a total artificial NY experience hit up 240 for some over priced drinks and a pretty great rooftop view of the Empire State Building. If you want a more fun experience going out, most people have been hitting up Williamsburg. Start off at smorgasbord and then go bar hoping there. Lower east side is a safe bet if you want packed bars without the midtown tourist feel.

240? You mean 230 5th? Yeah that place is chill. Its hilarious if you're there and it gets cold, they break out those red bathrobes for the girls.

Yeah, LES/East Village are my favorite places for going out.

You can not drink alcohol in public in the US

False.

bustle:
Imagine getting off from work, stopping in a grocery store, buying a six pack, and being able to pop open a bottle on your way home (walking, of course). Imagine being able to openly drink a margarita on the beach, or sip on a mimosa in the park on the weekends. Imagine taking your dog on a walk with a mint julep to accompany you. These are all beautiful thoughts, and if you live in one of these cities, they're also realistic thoughts. Now start planning your next vacation... Memorial Day is coming up.

Hood River, OR

This port city that rests along the Columbia River has no open container laws, and allows drinking in public. Is there anything better than cracking open a beer and enjoying the scenic Pacific Northwest? I think not.

Las Vegas, NV

One of the major draws of Las Vegas is that you're allowed to openly drink alcohol on the Strip. But you knew that already.

Butte, MT

Located in Silver Bow County, Butte allows open containers on the streets so long as it's not between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. Seems like a fair trade to me.

Fredericksburg, TX

Texas truly is the real, wild west. Head to the quaint town of Fredericksburg, a city that allows the imbibing of booze on its streets.

New Orleans, LA

As long as you're not carrying glass, you can spend your time waltzing around the French Quarter with a drink in hand.

Gulfport, MS

The Mississippi gulf coast is a beautiful place — and it can be even more beautiful when you're enjoying a mixed drink outdoors.

Savannah, GA

This beautiful and historic city has no open container laws, meaning you can spend a day at the park with a drink in hand.

Erie, PA

The East Coast, never to be left out, gets its share of public drinking in Erie, Pennsylvania.

You are pretty thick, aren't you? The whole point of having to publish an article like that ("Imagine being able to openly drink a margarita on the beach, or sip on a mimosa in the park on the weekends.") is that drinking alcohol in public is a big deal in the United States (also your list doesn't include NYC, you clown) and in a country of 300M+ people there are a handful of places that allow it.

Hang out with your coworkers. Just go wherever they are going.

If you want to do some touristy things (Statue of Liberty, etc), then invite some coworkers who don't live in the city with you.

Making friends with ppl would be my number 1 priority.

Sunday brunch is big when you're young in NYC as well. A lot of places have brunch/drink deals for unlimited drinks until sometime in the afternoon. If you can catch one or two that month with some friends, it will be fun.

long time New Yorker here.

95% of the people you see walking around Manhattan on a July weekend = not a New Yorker. make some friends-- maybe they'll take you out to typical weekend destinations. (Connecticut's Gold Coast, North shore of Long Island, Hamptons, certain towns down the Jersey shore, etc).

enjoy.
