Getting a dog in Finance
I was just curious if anybody in finance has successfully had a dog (with not having a stay at home individual to take care of it). If so, is the dog happy? Also, would I have to hire a dog trainer.
I just want a dog. :(
Thanks!
Genuinely can't tell if this is a troll or not.
I am being 100% serious. SORRY. I am actually curious since I will be starting out soon and I am curious if it is a bad idea to get a dog. I have always wanted a dog but never had the opportunity. However, I do not want to have a very sad/mistreated dog because I am working a lot either.
So, I was curious if anyone has already gone through the process of getting a dog. I know I 100% cannot get a puppy as they need much more care, but I was hoping to get a 1 or 2 year dog from a shelter!
Hope that was convincing enough to not be troll-like. :)
If you want a friend on Wall Street, get a dog
Buy a Greyhound. When home alone, they can sleep 18 hours a day. Super friendly and they look like Aristocrats.
Don't get a dog
Why would you want the extra responsibility? ... "No, I can't go, I have to get home and feed/walk/pick up after my dog."
Give your life more meaning?
Get a hobby instead. Put your energy into something or someone, but not a dog. That just screams "I need something to love me now".
Anyone have a dog? (Originally Posted: 01/02/2009)
Does anyone on here have a dog? I really want to get one, but I have no time to take care of it really. Whenever I try telling people I know I'm getting a dog, they say its going to die since I'm never home. Anyone working brutal hours have a dog? One of the issues is, I've never actually had one, so I have no idea what it entails to take care of one.
An analyst that graduated from his 2 year analyst stint last year had a dog (2006 - 2008 class). At lunch he would go home to feed it or walk it, and sometimes at dinner as well. When he was absolutely killed at work, I think having the dog put him in a crunch a number of times. Given how slow things are now, you may be able to pull it off. Do realize though that its like having a child, you can't just decide you're lazy and don't want to feed it one afternoon --- you don't have a choice. Your co-workers also won't be very sympathetic to your dog responsibilities. My personal belief is that it is more of a burden then it is worth and that you should wait a couple of years for when your schedule gets better, but of course only you know if you have the dedication to take care of it.

No way you will have enough time, especially any dog that is over 20 pounds. It is just cruel to the dog to be ignored that much.
Just my 2 cents...
Don't get a dog. A dog is a huge responsibility. They require a lot of time and attention. If you will hardly ever be home you should definitely not get a dog (unless you find a girlfriend who is willing to take care of it for you..of course you'll run the risk of the dog liking her more than it likes you since you are never around).
i used to have a dog. it ran away when i forgot to feed it for a week. i was busy working on an LBO. anyway, one night i went looking for it and saw it hanging out with a homeless man. needless to say it disgusted me almost as much as when i found out my ex gf was dating an ops analyst from BofA.
I stabbed the homeless man to death and then stomped the dog to death.
I had it videotaped. See below.
We're about to enter a Great Depression. Don't you want a president who's already dressed for it?
Funny
a little chow or something?
I don't think that a dog is a good idea for those who work a lot. Sorry, but I don't believe you can handle it, unless you hire someone who will babysit with your pet. I don't get a dog, but I agree with @IBchimp that it's a huge responsibility. Friend of mine used to have a dog and she spent a lot time to take care of it.
I have 2 dogs.
Me and my girlfriend adopted two because they could keep eachother company. I'm in IB and she is into Sales, so we work a lot but they are great by themselves. I guess the main thing is to prepare the dog to be by himself for a while. We hired a dogtrainer and had classes how to train them, so they wouldn't make a mess when they are left alone in the house.
That being said, having a dog when you return home is one of the best things ever. Even when I am dead tired, just seeing them and taking them for a walk makes me relax and forget about work. And they love you, it is a great feeling coming back home and being greeted by someone so excited to see you. So yeah, I think it is possible and it's one of the best decisions I have made.
Oh, and if you are going to get a dog. Please adopt. He will be so greatful and will love you forever.
No
They are 100% like having a child. Not that I have a kid, cause kids are fucking gross. We are lucky because we live close (as in down the street) from retired family that come and hang out most of the day with the dog. My gf and I are huge dog people and take her everywhere we go. She is a huge responsibility and need LOTS of time with people. If you are young, I would wait a little until you can enjoy it more. My constant 12-16 hour plus days are over for the most part because well, I decided they are as I got older so I have more of a normal schedule now to have fun with other stuff in the personal life.
Incoming ib guy wants a dog (Originally Posted: 11/16/2013)
Hello all,
I want a puppy. I commuted from home during my 4 years of school and always wanted a pup; however, my mother wouldn't allow dogs inside the house. Now that I am off to the bb ib world in a coverage group, I was wondering if I would be able to get a little pup for myself. Is this feasible with the rough work weeks? Or should I wait until I'm done and then get one. I also do not plan on having any roommates.
This is not a troll post. Don't violate me.
Thanks!
Og
This is not really feasible and also not fair to the dog. I would wait until you have the time to care for it properly.
It's a free country so of course you can get a dog, but it would suck for the dog if you're never around.
That would be one lonely pup :(
...get two to prevent them being lonely, and one of these:

I'd use an "agility ball" that athletes use, probably more interesting for the dog to chase than a tennis ball. Skip to 2:50.

All done, oh, and teach it to pee on a paper or something.
TT
Don't do it. It's not fair for the dog and the last thing you will want to stress about when you are pulling an all nighter is finding someone to walk your "pup".
Yeah, agreed with the above. It's not fair to the dog. When you come home at 1 or 2am, you're not going to walk or play with it and there's a lot of added stress on how to take care of the dog when you're not around.
Wait until you either get promoted to the point where you have more control and say over your life and schedule, or when you leave banking for a job that allows you to have more normal hours. Otherwise you'll just be making two lives miserable - the dog's for not having a master to play with, and yours when the dog becomes more of a burden then a companion.
This is depressing :( thanks for this guys. I never had a pet before so I really don't understand the dynamic of the relationship between a pup and it's owner. I never thought about it from the pups point of view. I wouldn't want to put it through that. Sad day for me :(
If you want a dog, just wait for one of the PE companies who did some buyout in '07 to do an IPO.
Should I get a dog? (Originally Posted: 02/18/2012)
Getting lonely in my studio lately, and was thinking of getting a dog. Before suggesting roommates/girls, I don't need another human being, just a dog that doesn't talk back. Taking into considerations our busy work schedules and extra caring expenses, do you think this is a good idea? Do any of you have pets?
Horrible idea. You won't be able to give it nearly enough attention.
Getting a dog is literally paying to have your place ruined/made to smell like dog. Plus Id mind keeping a dog cooped up in an apartment all day.
From another stance, I also hate the people in my building who have dogs. They never shut up and one bit me once. I hate dogs and they have given me enemies.
Get a cat.
Cats are independant, they won't shit all over the place and they can help you with your affection deficit.
You can even play Patty-cake with him if you want
that second video is the cutesttttttt
don't get a dog - you won't be able to pay attention to it and then it'll be sad.
Am I the only one trying to look up her skirt the whole time??
I was also more interested in that pussy instead of the one poking her.
Fucking hate cats.
I hate cats, but that is the only animal I would consider getting if I was living alone or with other people who work. I think it would be abjectly cruel to have a dog in a house for more than say 6 hours at a time, and you are gonna be at least 8 every day. I love my dog (at my parents house) and I always go home fast after golf so I don't leave her alone too long. Golf takes at most 4 hours. So yeah, no dog for me living alone.
Agree with MMBinNC. Abdel is right, the only decent option here is a cat, so if you don't like cats you're fucked. Even a small dog requires attention. My friend has an Italian Greyhound that literally sleeps probably 20 hours per day and still needs to go out at least 2-3 times. Plus, when she was a puppy she needed a lot more attention than she does now
Unfortunately, dogs require lots of attention. Small or large. No way would it be fair to the dog to keep it cooped up in an apartment.
I've got a golden retriever that I love, but it takes a lot of time and money to keep him happy and healthy.... especially in the city. If you don't have the time and money (easily 5k+ a year with doggy day care and walkers) to do that, consider a cat. I, however, personally think cats suck.
Just thought I'd add to the consensus. The only acceptable animal here is a cat. You will fuck your dog up by barely being home. Horrible idea.
I love my dogs, but they are SO MUCH WORK. I can't imagine living in the city with a dog or dogs if you had to work full time. I have to take mine out in the morning, in the afternoon, and before bed for about a half hour each session.
Kenneling a big dog can be a pain in the ass, too. And you have to do it every time you want to go out of town.
Seems like you all agree that getting a dog is not worth it right now. Too bad I can't stand cats.
