I know that MS Fixed Income has been weak over the past couple of years but I was wondering how the HK office in particular has fared? Is it equally weak or has it been doing well only to be pulled down by the NY/London offices? Also, within the HK office then, are there any particular desks that have performed well?
Fixed Income and rates is weak across the board. Remember Asia will be the first to fire and last to hire as lots of the business is trickle down from other geographies.
MS FX option is probably most profitable desk in MS London, unsure about Asia, but I imagine Equities and Credit desk are doing fairly well in HK, FX shouldn't be bad, the biggest market is the YEN, and there will be some interesting development with the YUAN in the future
Thanks a lot man. Credit derivatives sound quite interesting to me and they seem like they may be something on the up given the current market environments. Also, thinking about forex options but no idea how much flow they get. I heard that right now plain vanilla desks are the best desks to go to because they always get the most flow and have the highest PnL.
Well, you should probably be well versed in bond math. Not sure how MS is structured, but the fixed income division may include structured products as well... in that case, you may want to know something about credit default swaps, CDO's etc. Many of these groups are under fire given the subprime mess (not sure how this impacts Hong Kong), so be prepared to discuss current events intelligently.
I'm not too familiar with the banking system in HK, would anyone care to shed some light on the monetary policies and how they are affected by the US, etc?
I was talking to someone else who interviewed with them just the other day. Why does MS S&T in HK call themselves MS Fixed Income? Is there no Equities division?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone else has a phone interview for MS HK FID coming up or if anyone has interviewed for this position before? I have a phone interview with a MD for this soon and was wondering what to expect.
I am prepared for market questions, fit etc. but I wanted to know if interviews for S&T in HK are more fit or technical based than the ones for NY?
I have a similar phone interview, but for IED. HR told us over the informational chat that it would be a combination of fit and technicals, but mostly fit at the first few stages.

Ah, how many rounds are there expected to be?

Can't speak for MS, but I did Barclays S&T first round and it was 100% fit. No technicals at all.
Thanks. Was that this recruiting season or in the past?

Would you recommend a currencies desk then?

hey, do you know if MS IB in HK has started interviewing?
last year I know my friend took a test for interviews, I'm not sure if it will be same this year.
JJLM, I'm not sure about IB, but for FID, i took a web assessment on logic--it was tricky but i think i did pretty well.
