MS Finance - University of Rochester
Hi, request you to please evaluate my profile for University of Rochester MS Finance Program-
GRE-306(Q 161)
Qualified Chartered Accountant
Cleared CFA Level 1
3yrs internship experience in EY
3yrs corporate finance work experience
Any other University suggestion for MS Finance is most welcome :)
Thanks
Msf programs are shit fam. Hit up HBS.
Great advice.
OP, welcome to WSO.
Good profile. Should be good for UR. What are your goals. UG university and GPA. Etc. Happy to help.
Well, he's already in CF and has 3 years experience. Why would he take a MSF to do another entry-level job? IB, ER, AM, etc. are out of the window from Rochester. All he needs is one more year of experience to do b-school and likely have better options than a MSF that isn't great.
TL;DR Go to Villanova!
thanks for your inputs. UG CGPA-3.62/4.0 Goal to work in IB or in corporate finance
I'd say this. You have a good profile to get into school. At this point in your career I'd say why not look at an MBA?
Most corporate finance jobs will give equal weight to an MSF or MBA so I could see an argument towards doing the shorter and cheaper degree. Have you looked at a PT MBA or MSF? Where are you located?
UR is going to be tough for IB, but the school has a great network, especially in NYC. Also, you'd be taking classes with Simon MBA students.
I'd need to know more about your background to give really good advice though. Are you international? Why not an MBA? Where in the US are you currently (if you're not international). Etc.
Feel free to PM me. This thread has been hijacked unfortunately.
OP, what do you want to do? Please let me know more about your experience. More than happy to help and answer your question.
Thanks for replying. I wish to work in IB or in corporate finance
I'm not worried that you'll get accepted into MSFs, but your profile is overqualified for MSF. there are other unfortunate ones who did >=3 years of work before MSF, and it's a terrible outcome for them.
Why the fuck would someone with 3 years experience IN CORPORATE FINANCE do some shit MSF program? Seriously? Waste another 90k+ and loss of income just to get another 70k job? Must be part of the lucky sperm club.

One legitimate enough reason is to change the trajectory. It's like... Doing it to shake things up, but sometimes the shake itself is another death spiral like you pointed out.
I wish to study in depth finance and not try for MBA as of now
You have to quit your job for deep finance? You don't do deep enough of a job in 3 years? You don't wanna work hard enough for CFA or does CFA not count for deep finance?
You should thank me for pointers and quickly get your ass in line, not laying your ass here for spoonfeed, listening to TNA's rant and staying on path to be another a WSO legend (simultaneously a real life loser)
Understood?
Plz elaborate
Hi,
Not sure whether I can post here. I too, am an Indian Chartered Accountant planning to do an MSF. I have one year of work experience in a boutique IB firm. I look into capital raising and debt syndication. Future goal is either Corporate banking or Investment banking - corporate finance. Location - NYC>Boston>Chicago>SF
I have few universities shortlisted based on my own research. 1. University of Rochester 2. Fordham University 3. Brandeis University 4. Syracuse University
Decent extracurrics, GPA 4/4.

Hi all, I would like to know how's the MSF Program of University of Rochester - Placements, internship opportunities, job fairs, kind of jobs post completion, industry, etc
None of those programs place people at BBs.
I am okay with Non- BBs too. Big4 and MM would be good too.
hi.. I have got a similar profile except that I don't have a 4/4 CGPA.. I am a Chartered Accountant from India.. have u given ur GRE Tamarind?
Hey, try searching for your question on the search function. This is a thread I found that might be of use; https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/masters-in-finance-university-of… . Also ask the university to put you in touch with a current student to talk to. Or find Alumini/current students on LinkedIn to message. Hope that helps!
PMed you.
thanks! will do that
Terrible program. Don't go. The STEM designation is the only plus. They applied for the STEM designation in the first place because they liked ripping off international students and wanted to keep doing that! Without internationals, no one would attend it lol
Out of those 4, Rochester is the "best" but recruiting is going to be tough. What are your stats? GMAT? Any CFA progress? What institution did you do your UG?
Since you're an international student, is really look at STEM programs. It will help when recruiting comes. I'd suggest you look at schools with better recruiting and the STEM if you want the best shot at job placement. Other than that, it will be a lot tougher.
Thanks for your reply TNA. I am yet to take GMAT. Is CFA necessary since most of the CFA and MSF curriculum overlap, hence I do not see the point. UG was one among Top 10 Colleges in Mumbai University.
STEM is definitely high on agenda. Which other better bschools? Since I am not exactly looking for a quanty msf, it really limits my options.
hi, Thanks for replying. Did u attend the UoR MSF Program? Why do you think it's so bad?
why would you ask anyone here to answer this. Lazy?
Ask whoever were in the program recently. Even if I was a Simon alum, you'd have looked lazy.
A friend of mine did the MSF at Rochester. International student: now is unemployed. Little internship at UniCredit (italian bank, no BB)
Most MSF programs are dog shit.
Maybe. MSF grads often earn similarly to a target undergrad salary though, if that's your argument.
There are always exceptions
likely because he in international student and needed a work Visa vs. MSF...?
Guys except few, I don't see anybody answering my question.
Please stick to the topic!
You'd get in the program but it is not worth it. You only need 1 more year of experience for a MBA. People don't get IB from rochester in general and the ones that do aren't people with 3 years of experience.
