SEO - Investment Banking NY

The application is online, feel free to ask me any questions or if you'd like to discuss your candidacy. I'd be very interested in following up on your interest in joining the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity.
I have two questions:
First, are you an advisor for the program or have you in some way in the past been involved in the program?
Secondly, according to some website, the selectivity of the program is just a little over 10 percent. Typically, what are the qualifications of candidates selected in terms of GPA, job experience and SAT scores.
I just started my freshman year a couple of weeks ago and would like to know how to position myself for an almost guaranteed spot. I'm already aware of the usual, get involved, get a high GPA, blah blah blah. I want real stats so I can realistically know where I stand and where I should improve myself.
You can pm this information, by the way.
You know, I thought very little of this program when I was in school. I know a lot of people think highly about it and have enjoyed their experience, but I thought their process was silly and arcane and they took some seriously weak candidates and rejected very strong people who got multiple internship offers. I understand the appeal of the program and its stated goals, but I knew more than a few frustrated people who excelled in classes and did a lot around campus only to see some slackers who were in our classes get into desirable firms through SEO. It would be OK if that were the exception, but it seems to happen too often. There's a reason a the consulting firms pulled out of the program a couple of years ago.
Sorry, had to vent. My experience is limited (knew about ~15 or so people who got it) and might be unrepresentative of the program as a whole.
To vector1990: As cookie-cutter as it sounds, focus on the GPA and extracurriculars (from what I hear, they really like that), particularly community service for maximum impact. Spending too much time on other aspects is not recommended especially since there is no consensus on how much they help you, resulting in a high-effort, low-impact use of your time. GPA is more important than people think.
I agree. In my experience, the SEO interns I met had a very large range of compentency, from some really smart, competent interns to serious idiots who had no point being an intern. It has some benefits, but also has some serious drawbacks in terms of the way you will be perceived.
I'm here to recruit for SEO and to ensure that anyone who's looking for support in the recruiting process can find it. As a new member to the SEO Alumni Recruiting Fellowship, I can attest to the difficulty of the application having gone through the interview, training, and internship program. You should recognize that in any analyst class, including SEO, there will be students with a diversity of backgrounds that represent a variety of majors including: economics, political science, accounting, finance, business administration, and art history among many others. Alongside that same diversity of educational and geographic backgrounds, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages in constructing and maintaining a growing global internship program that continues to expand to company finance, London, and Hong Kong. Upon graduating from the internship in corporate finance, SEO goes beyond a typical investment banking internship in following through on the individual's commitment to career development with continual feedback and guidance.
Jeez, what are you, a paid recruiter?
with consultant on this one. The process is rigorous, but I wouldn't say any more so than say a GS superday. From my own experience, they were pretty lenient with my application as I submitted, canceled it, and just went it looked like I wasn't going to be interning anywhere, asked again to have an interview. They were really nice about it, but i ended up interning away from the program. Bottom line, any of my friends who wanted to be in the program, were accepted.
From my observation, some of the kids in the program would have gotten internships anyway, they just didn't want to have that sort of stress during recruiting season (a few of my friends took this route for this specific reason). Some were also sophomores. It's a mixed bag of interns, definitely more bad than good. I hate to generalize, but i'd say 90% of the 'good' interns were from reputable target schools. I worked with a few last summer and didn't find them exactly competent or drive. Above all else, there was a lot of lip service but not much substance.
The actual program though definitely allows interns to experience everything about ibanking, especially if you're required to go to a presentation at every other bank on the Street during the nights, and had extra training sessions on the weekend. Although, some of my friends in the program felt like it was more stress than it was worth. The other good thing is that it allows you to interview early at other banks of your choice, provided you had some good meetings with the people at these nightly presentation sessions.
i wish. i think HR is really my calling.
Actually, I meant Blue, but Serendipity could be one too, lol.
i think blue is some sort of hardcore advocate for SEO...a lot of their alums help actively recruit I think.
No one's really replied to my initial question as to what are the qualifications of previous candidates. Also, approximately what percentage of interns would you estimate are sophomores?
