Is it OK to leave very short-term employment off my resume?
For various reasons, I only worked for a company for a few weeks. Is it OK if I just don't put that on my resume, and pretend this employment never existed?
There is really not much to talk about for such a short-term employment, and I also don't want to answer why I left that company in just a few weeks. (It's not my fault. I would have loved to stay. But it doesn't matter anymore, I simply don't want to bring it up)
I am not sure if the future employer will find out that I hide this experience. Our industry is quite small, and I was registered during that time, so my U4 would reflect that.
If my future employer found out that I didn't put that experience on my resume, will they get pissed for hiding?
My view is that a resume is a sales document, so just put whatever you think frames you as a solid candidate on there. So yes, I think it's fine to just leave it off as long as you have a reasonable explanation for what happened.
I understand that I would need to disclose this during an application before background check after a decision to hire has been made, my concern is that if I omit this on the resume, but disclose it properly on the app, there may be a possibility of getting an offer pulled.
It's not a problem if there's a legit reason ("business took a downturn" or "the entire team was axed") and you can explain it.
You don't need to list all places you have had employment on your resume. Tailor your resume for the job you are applying to & don't lie.
Most background checks will not list your past places of employment. I imagine unless its a very comprehensive security clearance type background check it might.
However, if you state on your resume you worked at XYZ Company. The background check will verify you did in fact work at XYZ Company.
I agree with all the other posters and say it's fine. The point of a resume is to list relevant experiences/skills for your next job. After a few years into your career, you'll start leaving stuff off your CV like the internship you had between freshman and sophomore year. 1) you don't have room and/or it looks cluttered; and 2) It's no longer relevant as employers won't really care.
In this case, I don't really see your short-term work experience having any impact on the you ability to the next job. I would say you should feel free to leave it off.
No need to include it. In addition to all the points previously made, having a entry that only lasted for a few weeks looks a bit weird anyhow.
Short Term Job Resume question (Originally Posted: 06/27/2016)
Hey Guys,
Before my current job I had an operations back ground. I started my career in Ops for 1.5 years, then I had another stop in Ops for 5 months before winding up where I am now(non ops, fundamental analysis role for 1.5yrs
You can update you resume with the 5 months job profile as it is also important. You can explain about that clearly if employers question about it.
Short Term Positions on Resume? (Originally Posted: 02/07/2013)
So I'm in a unique situation currently and need some experienced advice.
Upon graduation I did not have a job and began working with the finances of my family's commercial real estate property. I was able to provide some actual value by giving an income approach valuation as well as some strategic financial goals for my family who really hadn't run the numbers this in depth and clear for comparison. I was doing this for around 8 months.
I finally quit because I was offered a corporate finance internship in treasury working with ABS programs. I did this is because I couldn't find anything else. Unfortunately it's only 6 months because the company is moving and only need me for that time to pick up extra work and help during the transition.
Where my problem lies is I plan to continue looking for jobs throughout the internship but it definitely looks dodgy to have graduated, worked at one place for ~6 months, now working at another for ~2 months and am applying for full time jobs. On top of that some of my most relevant experience came in college so I don't want to just dump those bullet points off.
For background, I passed Level 1 CFA and am taking Level 2 in June and am looking for equity research or investment banking with the hopes of eventually doing buy-side work (3-5 years).
Any tips on this situation?
Bump?

No.
A resounding NO...
Are you on good terms with the firm? If no, I would not put it on.
