Upenn Econ or Rutgers Undergraduate

Ok...So what do I do.

I currently go to Rutgers University and study Finance and Math. I got accepted transfer to UPenn Cas-Econ. My options are as follows...

UPenn- Econ - 58k of debt total, payments look to be $700/month for ten years.

Rutgers - Finance & Math - No debt

or I could change my major and still graduate on time to either

Rutgers - Comp Sci & Math or Math & Econ - No Debt.

So pretty much do I finish Rutgers for free or do I pay roughly 84k over 10 years to go to UPenn for Econ and hope to improve my chances of making it on the street? What if I did a tech degree at Rutgers like Comp Sci, how hard would it be to get into a tech dept at a big bank?

Side Note:
I will finish Rutgers with a 3.9+ regardless of the path I take.

People in CAS get shafted in terms of recruiting compared to Wharton. I think the students have equal potential but firms are biased. It's just silly

Rutgers has a perfectly respectable CS program. It won't get you into the front office, but it will get you into the back office by a comfortable margin and you can work your way to the front well before you'd have the UPenn debt paid off.

If you are coming from a non-target school, the goal is to stay technical, technical, technical. You need to be highly competent in stuff that the target school kids don't know how to do (like programming), and figure out a way to parlay that into a front-office job by consistently demonstrating competence.

If you like risk, go for UPenn. You're getting a great deal relative to the guys who came in as Freshmen. If you like to play a conservative game, stay at Rutgers, take lots of finance, algorithms, and math courses, try and get into a product-specific technology group at a bank, and fight your way into the front office.

Also, a 3.9 GPA from an engineering program would be pretty sweet no matter where it came from. Does Rutgers CS curve to a C+/B- average like most CS programs?

if you don't like PROGRAMING don't do CS
HI. FRIENDLY BOFH HERE. I SEE YOU MUST HAVE USED MY NEW SPELL CHECK TOOL. HOW IS IT WORKING FOR YOU, AND WHAT IS PROGRAMING? NEXT TIME, CHECK WHICH SPELL-CHECKER YOU'RE USING!!! BWAHAHA!!! :D

If this was Rutgers vs Wharton I would say the extra money is worth it, but I feel like CAS isn't going to do shit for you. The Wharton kids will shit on you and it sounds like you will get crap from the other ivy's. I say stay at Rutgers.

Side note, your obviously smart, have you looked into transferring to other top schools? You could probably get into Stern or something else. That might be another option.

58k of debt is not a whole lot..Docs come out with 200k+ of debt. When I finished i worked for a year saved a shit ton and bought a small investment property. Mortgage rates are lower than student loan rates(Thank Bush) so I was able to take a greater mortgage and pay off all the high int(7%) studnt loans that I had.

If you want to get into banking go to UPENN who knows if you can transfer to wharton after? Plus won't you be able to cater your classes the way you want....

^^^ Agree with above, that sounds like a smart plan. Once you start going quant with things people care a lot less about where you went to school then what you know.

I think Slut-gers is a fine school. Coming from NY where we have a shitty (or at least now well branded state education system) I think NJ has a decent product. Michigan, California and Virginia really should be the templates every state follows when creating a state university system.

I would have to agree with most of the above posters. Rutgers vs UPenn Non-W, I'd stay with Rutgers strictly because W is the big target and get all of the attention. Additionally, the 75k+ will definitely be a big hit. That said, if you are very early in your U Grad career, you might have the opportunity to move into W once you are in UPenn.

One of my friends from HS, for example, attended UPenn for a year (non-W) and then moved into W (he just had to maintain a certain GPA, major in this or that, etc - but essentially he found a much easier way of getting into W through another not quite as competitive program. If you think that could be something that might work for you, and you've got the time and interest, then the UPenn option is definitely a strong contender.

Ignoring that possibility, however, Rutgers and free vs. UPenn CAS for more than 75k, I'd go Rutgers and make sure to keep your GPA up and network your ass off.

I remember when I was younger they used to have great names... the fat cunt, fat fuck, fat fellatio, etc. Then RU made em clean up the names.

Stromboli's at SYF are the shit

Seriously, Philly does have some good pretzels though

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Cheesesteaks are highly overrated. I dont care what people say, they boil down into two categories. Some places have a huge pile of meat ready at all times and other make it fresh. The places with a lot of meat need a high volume customer flow or else you are getting shitty meat. The fresh places take forever, but the product is good.

Thanks for the advice so far, but cheesesteaks VS. Fat Sandwiches have a small influence on my final decision hhahaha. But so far great advice, keep it coming...I need your opinions.

I live in Manayunk and have ti recommend Delesandros or Chubbies. Totally agree with Tony Lukes. Larrys was pretty good also. I think Denicci's ( spelling is wrong) in the Reading Terminal is a hidden gem.

You're clearly a bright guy (or have the numbers to trick other people into believing you are) and would probably score well on the GMAT or GRE. If you are willing to take on the debt to go to UPenn, why not take on the same amount of debt (plus an extra year) and get an MSF or MFin from a top tier program (Princeton, MIT, LSE, etc.)? That way, you can keep your Rutgers GPA on your resume and go to a target school where you wouldn't be prejudged as a second-rate student just because of your program.

If you're going to do amazing academically at both places, go to UPenn. You'll have a easier time making 6 figures right out of college and if you go IB, you can pay it off in 1-2 years.

At Rutgers, you'll have no debt but will have less opportunities to be seen by big firms/ banks.

All in all, the quality of education, people, resources and community will be better at UPenn. You'll also likely never have to go back to school because of the value of the degree.
