Northwestern Mutual Real Estate

Does anyone have insight on the team, culture, comp progression, exit ops, etc? I know the company's financial advisor internships give it a bad rep, but I'm curious about their reputation in the real estate industry. Are they comparable to NYL/MetLife?

IMO, fantastic shop with great folks running the platform. Comparable to NYL, Met, Pru, etc, but in my mind even better because they only invest general account money (aka no third party Capital), so they have total discretion and are typically very creative with how they structure deals they really want to pursue. Plus, no curtain between equity or debt teams. Originators at the firm source and originate both equity and debt investments for the platform. Great spot, overall. Can’t go wrong.

yes, you are correct, don’t do the insurance sales side. Horrible spot.

They are a behemoth that flies almost entirely under the radar. They work with some of the biggest names in CRE on both the debt and JV development side. They do the occasional acquisition, but definitely at a minimum given the prevailing market conditions. In recent years, they have been going further out on the risk curve to do some pretty interesting and complex capital stack building. They play quite a bit in niche asset classes, especially MHC and self storage. Their debt and equity teams are combined, so an analyst would be exposed to both, which is almost unheard of. IMO, great place to launch from, or stay forever like most people there do.
