AM Product to Research / Investing Role

Hello All:

I am currently a product associate in a large private markets asset manager within their credit division. Although the experience has been great and provided opportunities to learn tons about markets and the structuring of investment products etc, I have realized that I eagerly would like to gain a deeper understanding of and focus on the investment decision making/research side. I have ~4 years of experience on the AM product side (covering Alts then Credit more specifically) but it is now clear to me that I would like more exposure to the investment side rather than the strategy or development of said assets/products.

I understand that most professionals begin their journey in the opposite direction, beginning with a role more technical and investing oriented (IB, etc.) then transitioning to the more relaxed product/IR side - however I intensively crave a more tangible technical skillset and experiences to fulfill my goal of becoming an investment professional. I know this kind of transition is typically unheard of outside of the traditional CFA/MBA track (and a few outliers), but does anyone have any thoughts or words of advice/encouragement for this kind of a switch?

I am not particularly interested in any traditional BB investment banking coverage/product role, but anything touching the investment side or research based would be ideal. I honestly do not imagine many shops are looking to take on someone for a role like this without a year or two of IB/PE/Research so want to be realistic and set goals accordingly. Would be willing to even downgrade from Associate to Analyst. Any thoughts are helpful!

While it's true that many professionals start on the technical side and then transition to roles like product management or investor relations, it's not unheard of to move in the other direction. The key is to leverage your existing skills and experiences, and to be willing to learn and adapt.

You're right that many firms prefer candidates with a background in investment banking, private equity, or research for these roles. However, your experience in asset management, particularly in alternative investments and credit, could be a strong selling point. You already have a solid understanding of financial markets and investment products, which is a great foundation to build on.

One possible path could be to start by seeking out opportunities within your current organization. If there are research or investment-oriented roles available, expressing your interest and demonstrating your eagerness to learn could open doors. You could also consider pursuing further education or certifications, such as the CFA, to bolster your technical skills.

Remember, every professional journey is unique, and there's more than one way to reach your goals. Stay open-minded, be proactive, and don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Good luck!
