Non "Quant" Roles at Chicago Prop Shops?
I was recently invited to an info night at a Chicago prop firm, and I am really surprised their recruiters even considered me. I am a Midwest state-school master’s in econ student, and while I have a solid foundation in math and programming, it is realistically not enough to work as a true quant.
I would like to understand whether these firms still have non-algo/quant trading roles, and what a middle-office role typically involves. I have seen references to fundamental research, derivatives, and fixed-income or ETF sales among others, but I'm not sure what a market maker would be doing with non quant traders. What does a non-quant career path look like at these firms, assuming it isn't totally dead? And is middle office at a prop a decent living?
