PLEASE Help Me with Breaking into Asset Management

Hello everyone.

I am a current sophomore and am really interested in breaking into asset management. I am staying in Austin, TX for over the summer, however, I have been unsuccessful finding an asset management firm that will take me (and I have emailed/called/linkedin messaged) for this upcoming summer... With that being said, I have several questions.

1. What is the best route for me to take this summer? I was planning on studying the CFA Level 1 Exam, but if you could give me your thoughts, it would be much appreciate.

2. Since I most likely won't find an internship for this summer, will this impact my chances for junior year summer internship? I go to a target school and have been networking to the best of my abilities, but I just am so not sure...

3. Which asset management firms do you guys think is the "best" not in terms of value, but more so in terms of work and locations?

4. If I don't land a junior year internship, what do you guys recommend that I do? Should I take a gap year and apply again for an internship or should I just really network hard and try to apply for the full time positions?

5. What do you guys recommend I start doing now to help improve my chances during recruiting?

Thank you and I would quite literally appreciate any and all help under the sun.

Breaking into asset management as a sophomore can be challenging, but there are actionable steps you can take to position yourself for success. Here's a breakdown of advice based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Best Route for This Summer

  • Alternative Experience: If you can't secure an asset management internship, consider other finance-related roles. Look into boutique investment banks, wealth management firms, or even financial planning offices. These experiences can still demonstrate your interest in finance and build relevant skills.
  • Skill Development: Studying for the CFA Level 1 exam is a solid plan, but keep in mind that you can only officially take the exam in your senior year. Instead, focus on building technical skills like financial modeling, Excel, and valuation techniques. The WSO Investment Banking Interview Prep Course or Technical Guide can be invaluable for this.
  • Networking: Continue reaching out to professionals in asset management. Even if you can't secure an internship, building relationships now can pay off later. Use the summer to set up informational interviews and expand your network.

2. Impact of No Sophomore Internship on Junior Year

  • Not having a sophomore internship won't necessarily hurt your chances for a junior year internship, especially since many major firms don't offer structured sophomore programs. However, it's crucial to show that you used your summer productively. Highlight any relevant experience, skills, or certifications you gain during this time.

3. Best Asset Management Firms

  • Firms like Fidelity, Wellington, and T. Rowe Price are highly regarded for their work culture and opportunities. Additionally, consider firms with a strong presence in your area or those that align with your investment interests. For example, Austin, TX, has a growing financial scene, so explore regional firms or offices.

4. If You Don’t Land a Junior Year Internship

  • No Gap Year: Taking a gap year is not recommended. Instead, focus on networking aggressively and applying for full-time positions during senior year recruiting.
  • Alternative Pathways: If you don't secure a junior internship, consider roles in equity research, wealth management, or even consulting. These can serve as stepping stones to asset management.
  • Certifications: If you find yourself without a full-time offer by senior year, completing the CFA Level 1 exam can boost your appeal to employers.

5. Steps to Improve Your Chances Now

  • Networking: Start building relationships with professionals at target firms. Follow up periodically with updates on your progress.
  • Technical Skills: Master financial modeling, valuation, and Excel. These skills are critical for asset management roles.
  • Extracurriculars: Join finance clubs, participate in case competitions, or take on leadership roles in relevant organizations.
  • Research and Stock Pitches: Develop a strong understanding of markets and practice creating stock pitches. This will prepare you for interviews and demonstrate your passion for investing.

Final Thoughts

While the road to asset management can be competitive, your proactive approach and willingness to seek advice are already setting you apart. Use this summer to build skills, expand your network, and gain any relevant experience you can. Remember, persistence and preparation are key. Good luck!
