Is it legally or practically possible to be employed by both Bain and Palantir at the same time?

A friend asked me about a guy who went viral on social media. He claims he was double-employed, working as a consultant at Bain while also holding a full-time role at Palantir. (And he's proud.)

I’m pretty familiar with both firms, and it’s hard for me to see how that would even be possible. Maybe during COVID when everything was remote, but even then there are constant ad hoc meetings and pretty demanding schedules.

He also claims he was the “only Canadian intern hire globally” at Blackstone, Point72, and Bain. That also sounds unusual. Does anyone know more about this or can shed some light on whether these claims are actually plausible?

"1.) Taught myself to code from scratch at 18 — iterated 17 hours daily for 6 months to land a Google AI engineering internship; this timeline is likely a world record. Back then, Google was the premier company to be at for AI and there were no LLMs to serve as tutors. Odds were terrible: at a non-target with 0 connections in tech. I didn’t care; I studied thousands of resumes to ascertain a direct path, willed my way to first place at all 6 hackathons I competed in including Hack the North, and flew to California for a weekend to scatter my paper resume across Google campus to get noticed.

2.) Sent 10,000+ cold emails with no pre-existing network to secure fundamental investing roles at Blackstone and Point72 (among the most coveted employers in high finance), becoming the only Canadian intern that year at both firms. This was unprecedented — HR scrambled to design new visa processes for me. I impressed so much at BX that they began to recruit directly at my school.

3.) Worked 2 in-person jobs simultaneously as a self-initiated challenge upon graduation: strategy consulting at Bain and technical lead at Palantir. Finished top bucket at Bain and fastest promo to manager in a new pod at Palantir. Ask me about how to take two meetings concurrently (yes, video on), carry 3 phones at all times, or hack plane ticket inventory to seemingly be in 2 places at once.

4.) Captained high school varsity soccer team (regional champions) despite starting to play at 15 — “a decade too late”. I overcame this with gruelling solo training: in the Canadian winter until my feet turned blue and in the shadows long after the sun had set. Teammates I once led now play for the national team."

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the claims made by this individual seem highly implausible, both legally and practically. Here's why:

  1. Double Employment at Bain and Palantir:

    • Both Bain and Palantir are known for their demanding schedules, with constant ad hoc meetings, client deliverables, and high expectations for availability. Balancing two full-time roles at such high-intensity firms would be nearly impossible without compromising performance at one or both.
    • Legally, most employment contracts at firms like Bain and Palantir include clauses prohibiting employees from engaging in other full-time employment or activities that could create conflicts of interest. This would make simultaneous employment at both firms a breach of contract.
    • Even during remote work periods, the logistics of attending meetings, managing deliverables, and maintaining the level of performance required at both firms would be extraordinarily challenging.
  2. "Only Canadian Intern Hire Globally" at Blackstone, Point72, and Bain:

    • While it's possible to be a standout candidate, the claim of being the "only Canadian intern hire globally" at three prestigious firms in the same year is highly unusual. These firms typically recruit from a wide range of schools and geographies, making it unlikely that only one Canadian intern would be hired across all three.
    • The claim that HR had to "design new visa processes" also raises questions, as these firms are well-versed in hiring international talent and have established processes for handling visas.
  3. Practical Feasibility of the Claims:

    • The description of working two in-person jobs simultaneously, attending meetings with video on, and carrying three phones to appear in two places at once sounds more like an exaggerated narrative than a realistic scenario. Even with exceptional time management skills, the physical and mental demands of such a setup would be unsustainable.
    • The timeline of achievements, such as teaching oneself to code in six months to land a Google AI internship, winning six hackathons, and securing roles at Blackstone and Point72 through 10,000+ cold emails, also stretches credibility. While impressive, the sheer volume and intensity of these accomplishments within a short timeframe seem unlikely.
  4. Social Media Virality:

    • It's worth noting that some individuals exaggerate or fabricate achievements to gain attention on social media. The claims made by this individual should be taken with skepticism unless independently verified.

In summary, while the story is intriguing, the claims appear to be highly exaggerated and, in some cases, legally or practically impossible. If your friend is considering taking inspiration from this narrative, it would be wise to focus on realistic and achievable goals instead.
