Is the case study normally the final round?

I have a case study that I am given tomorrow followed by an interview later that day where I guess I walk through the case. The role is an analyst role in diligence, so not really investment focused. Im getting a little anxious so I wanted to ask if case studies are usually towards the end of the interview process. And also, how many candidates normally make it to these case study rounds? I know every firm does it differently so maybe there isn't a real answer to this.

The firm is an about 150 people in total, and there's been around 175 applications according to LinkedIn. Im trying to figure out if im still competing with hundreds of people, or if by now they usually chop the list down considerably. I've been through one round of interviews with the hiring manager for this role, and he mentioned the case study/review interview but didn't elaborate on how much longer the process will take.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your questions:

  1. Case Study Timing in the Interview Process:

    • Case studies can occur at various stages of the interview process, but they are often used in the later rounds. For example, in the Advanced Professional Degree McKinsey Application Process, case studies were part of the second round, and there was a subsequent third round. This suggests that while case studies are significant, they may not always be the final step.
  2. Number of Candidates in Case Study Rounds:

    • The number of candidates who make it to the case study rounds can vary significantly by firm. However, it is common for the pool to be considerably narrowed down by this stage. For instance, in the context of consulting recruiting, the vast majority of applicants are cut during the screening round, leaving a smaller, more competitive group for subsequent rounds.
  3. Competition and Candidate Pool:

    • Given that your firm has around 150 people and received approximately 175 applications, it is likely that the list has been significantly reduced after the initial screening and first round of interviews. As mentioned in the WSO content, once you are in the small field of actual contenders, the competition is intense, but you have already climbed past many applicants.
  4. General Advice:

    • Stay focused on your preparation for the case study and subsequent interview. Practice with diverse case partners and ensure you are comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Additionally, be prepared for any behavioral questions that might come up, as firms often assess "fit" alongside case performance.

By now, you are likely competing with a much smaller group of candidates, and your focus should be on demonstrating your analytical skills, structured approach, and fit with the firm during the case study and interview.

Good luck!
