p72 summer academy interview case study difficulty
hey guys, got an early application for p72 academy's summer program but not too sure what to expect. i know that it wont involve actual financial modeling since it's for sophomores but not too sure what else to expect otherwise. this is for summer 2027
Based on the most helpful WSO content, the case study difficulty for Point72's Summer Academy interviews can vary depending on the program's focus and the candidate's level of experience. Since this is for sophomores, it's unlikely to involve advanced financial modeling. However, you can expect the following:
Bear, Base, Bull Projections: Some case studies may involve creating projections for a public company. While it might not require full financial modeling, you should be prepared to analyze data and present logical scenarios.
Critical Thinking and Research: The case study might test your ability to conduct research, synthesize information, and develop a thesis. This aligns with the Academy's focus on building fundamental skills.
Presentation Skills: You may need to present your findings in a clear and structured manner, as communication is a key part of the evaluation process.
Time Management: Past candidates have mentioned that case studies can be time-intensive, so managing your time effectively will be crucial.
While the difficulty level might not be as intense as for more senior roles, putting in effort and demonstrating a strong understanding of the basics will be essential. Good luck!

Former PM ($1B AUM) here. Don't confuse "no Excel" with "no math."
They aren't testing your modeling mechanics. They're testing your investment logic—can you think through a unit economics problem on a napkin?
Expect them to hand you a situation and see if you can isolate the one or two drivers that actually matter. Most students try to summarize everything (the "book report" trap). The Academy is screening for people who can filter signal from noise.
That's the leap they're looking for. Focus on understanding business drivers, not memorizing frameworks.
