I have experience in healthcare audit and am a 2024 intern in big tech ops finance (Google, Amazon, Microsoft). 2024 SA IB roles were very tough, but I could’ve done more prep. When should I begin to network for FT & what roles should I focus on? I am open to starting in a different position than IB that I could lateral to if needed.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, for a 2025 grad aiming for full-time (FT) roles, starting your networking efforts as early as possible is crucial, especially coming from a semi-non-target school with a 3.55 GPA. Your experience in healthcare audit and an upcoming internship in big tech ops finance at a prestigious company like Google, Amazon, or Microsoft sets a solid foundation for your career. Here's a structured approach to networking and targeting roles for FT recruiting:
Start Networking Now: Given your graduation timeline, initiating networking efforts immediately is advisable. The earlier you start, the more time you have to build meaningful relationships. Utilize LinkedIn, alumni networks, and professional events to connect with professionals in your areas of interest.
Leverage Your Internship: Your big tech ops finance internship offers a unique talking point and networking opportunity. Seek out mentors within the company and express your interest in finance. They might provide insights or even connections to the finance industry.
Focus on Roles with Transferable Skills: Given your background and openness to starting in positions outside of IB, consider roles in corporate finance, financial analysis, or even tech-focused roles within financial firms. These positions can offer valuable experience and potentially serve as a stepping stone to IB.
Consider Boutique Firms and Middle Market Banks: While aiming for IB roles, don't overlook boutique firms and middle-market banks. They often provide more opportunities for hands-on experience and might be more accessible from a networking perspective.
Prepare for Lateral Moves: If you start in a role outside of IB, continuously hone your financial modeling and valuation skills. Stay informed about the industry and be ready to leverage your network when lateral opportunities arise.
Utilize Your Audit Experience: Your healthcare audit experience is valuable. Highlight your analytical skills and understanding of financial statements during networking and interviews. This experience can be particularly appealing to firms with a focus on healthcare finance.
Stay Flexible and Open: The finance industry is vast, with many paths leading to success. Be open to exploring different roles and industries. Your diverse experiences can become your unique selling point.
Remember, persistence and a proactive approach to networking and skill development are key to navigating FT recruiting successfully. Keep an open mind, and don't hesitate to reach out to professionals in your desired field for advice and insights.
